子夏の弟子が友人との交際の方法を子張に尋ねた。
子張が言った。「子夏はなんと言いましたか」
子夏の弟子が答えた。「良い人と交わり、悪い人交わるな、と言われました」
子張が言った。「それは私の学んだことと違っている。君子は賢者の友人を尊敬する。そして普通の友人も受け入れる。善人を称讃するとともに無能の人をあわれむ。私はそう学んだ。自分がもし大賢であるなら、誰と交わろうと平気だ。自分がもし賢くなければ、私が相手を避ける前に、相手が私を避けるだろう」
英訳
Zi Xia disciple asked Zi Zhang how to socialize with friends.
Zi Zhang said, " What did Zi Xia say?"
Zi Xia disciple replied, " He was told that is to do fellowship with good people, is do not fellowship with bad people."
Zi Zhang said, " It is different from what I have learned. A man of virtue respect the sages ' friends.
And accept ordinary friends. Praise a good man,and pity the incompetent man. I learned so. If I am a great wise man, fine with who I'm dating. If I am not wise man,before I avoid the opponent, opponent will avoid me.
