論語467微子(びし)第十八

現代語訳

子路が老師との随行中に遅れた。そのとき、杖に草籠を担いでいる老人と出会った。

子路が尋ねた。「あなたは私の先生を見かけましたか」
老人が答えた。「なに？　先生だって？　お見かけするところ、その手足では百姓仕事をするようにも見えません。五穀の見分けもつかない方ですね。あなたの先生というのはどんな人ですか」
老人は杖を地に立てて、草を刈りはじめた。
子路は老人に敬意を表し、そのそばに立っていた。
すると老人は子路を自分の家に案内して一泊させた。鶏料理と、黍ご飯で子路をもてなした。そして自分の二人の息子を子路にひきあわせた。

翌日、子路は老師に追いつき、その話をした。

すると老師が言われた。「隠者だろう」

子路に、もう一度会ってくるように命じられた。

子路が訪ねると老人はいなかった。

子路は二人の息子にこう言った。「出仕しないのは義とはいえません。もし、長幼の序が大切であるのなら、君臣の義をすてていいという道理はありません。乱世だからといって自分の身を汚さないことは、大義をみだすことになります。君子が出仕するのは、君臣の義を行なうためであります。乱世で、道理が行われないのはもちろん承知しております」

英訳

Zi Lu was late when to accompany the Master. At that time, he met an old man who carrying a grass basket with a cane. 

Zi Lu asked, " Have you seen my teacher?"

The old man replied, " What? A teacher? I see,you does not seem to do the farmer work. You are a stranger to grains. What kind of person is your teacher?"

The old man set up the cane on the ground and began to mow the grass.

Zi Lu honored the old man and stood beside it.

Then the old man lead to him to his house, I was allowed to stay overnight. I entertained Zi Lu with chicken dishes and millet for rice. And, the two sons were meet to Zi Lu.

The next day, Zi Lu caught up with the Master and told this story.

And then,the Master was said, " A hermit."

Zi Lu was ordered to meet again.

There was no old man when Zi Lu visited.

Zi Lu said to his two sons, " It is not justice not to serve the  Imperial Court. If the order of young and old is important,There is no reason that it is good to throw away the justice of lord and vassal.

If without to pollute your body just because it is a turbulent times, a strong moral will disturb you.

The reason why A man of virtue to serve the Imperial Court,who  is to conduct the justice of lord and vassal. In a turbulent times, of course, we know that no reason will be made."
