子路曰、君子尚勇乎。子曰、君子義以爲上。君子有勇而無義、爲亂。小人有勇而無義、爲盜。

子路曰(しろいわ)く、君子(くんし)は勇(ゆう)を尚(たっと)ぶか、と。子曰(しいわ)く、
君子(くんし)は義以(ぎもっ)て上(じょう)を為(な)す。君子(くんし)も勇有(ゆうあ)りて
義無(ぎな)くんば、乱(らん)を為(な)す。小人(しょうじん)勇有(ゆうあ)りて義無(ぎな)くんば、盜(とう)を為(な)す。
現代語訳
子路が尋ねた。「君子は勇を尊びますか」
老師が答えられた。「君子が一番大事なのは義だ。君子に勇があって義がないと、反乱を起す。小人に勇があって義がないと盗みをする」
英訳
Zi Lu asked, " Is a man of virtue honor a courage?"
The Master was answered, " The most important thing about a man of virtue is justice. If man of virtue has a courage and there is no justice, he does to revolt. If a small-minded person has a courage and there is no justice, he does to steal."
