季氏が魯の属国の顓臾を討伐しようとした。季氏に仕えていた冉有と季路とが孔子に面会して、言った。「季氏が顓臾に対して討伐を起そうとしています」
孔子が言われた。「求よ、もしそうだとしたら、それはお前が間違っていると思う。顓臾という国は、昔、周王が東蒙山の祭祀をお命じになった国なのだ。今では魯の支配下に入っていて、その領主は明らかに魯の臣下だ。同じく魯の臣下たる季氏が勝手に討伐などできる事はできない」
冉有が言った。「当主殿が討伐を希望しております。私たち二人は賛成しているわけではありません」
孔子が言われた。「求よ、昔、周任という人が言った言葉に『力をつくして任務にあたり、任務が果たせなければその地位を退く。盲人がつまずいた時に支えてやることができず、ころんだ時にたすけ起すことができなければ、手引きはあっても無いに等しい』というものがある。全くそのとおりだ。お前のいうことは、間違っている。もしも虎や野牛が檻から脱走したら、それは誰の責任だ。亀甲や宝石が箱の中でこわれていたとしたら、それは誰の罪だ。よく考えてみるがいい」
冉有が言った。「ごもっともですが、しかし現在の顓臾は、城郭が堅固で、季氏の領地の費に近接してます。今のうちに討伐をしないと、将来、子孫の心配の種になります」
孔子が言われた。「求、君子というものは、自分の本心を率直にいわないで、言葉をかざることをしないのだ。私はこういうことを聞いたことがある。国や家族を運営する者は、領内の人々の貧しいのを憂えず、富の不公平を憂う。国家の財政が少ないのを憂えず、人心の安定しないのを憂える。富が平均すれば貧しさというものはない。人々の心がやわらげば貧しいこともない。人心が安定すれば国が傾くこともないだろう。だから、もし遠い土地の人民が帰服しなければ、文教徳化をさかんにして自然に帰服させるのがよい。すでに帰服して来たものは安心させてやるのがよい。今、話を聞いていると、由と求は、季氏を輔佐しているにもかかわらず、遠い土地の人民を帰服させることができていない。戦争になれば国は乱れる。しかも国内で兵を動かして動乱をひきおこそうしている。恐ろしいことだ。季孫の憂いの種は、実は顓臾にはなくて組織の問題であると思う」
英訳
A chief vassal of Ji family tried to subdue the Zhuan Yu of Lu's dependency. Ran You and Ji Lu, who was serving Ji family, met Confucius and said, " Ji family is trying to subdue Zhuan Yu."

Confucius was said, " Qiu, in the old days, the word ' Zhou Ren ' said, " I make an effort to work on a mission, to retire from the position if the mission is not fulfilled. Therefore, if the people of a distant land do not allegiance, It is good to make the education virtue prosperous, and to return to nature. It is good to be relieved what has already to allegiance.
