南宮适問於孔子曰、羿善射、奡盪舟、倶不得其死然。禹稷躬稼而有天下。夫子不答。
南宮适出。子曰、君子哉、若人。尚徳哉、若人。

南宮适(なんぐうかつ)孔子(こうし)に問(と)うて曰(いわ)く、羿(げい)は射(しゃ)を善(よ)
くし、奡(ごう)は舟(ふね)を盪(うご)かせしも、倶(とも)に其(そ)の死然(しぜん)を得(え)ず。禹(う)・稷(しょく)は躬(みずか)ら稼(か)して天下(てんか)を有(たも)つ。夫子(ふうし)
答(こた)えず。南宮适出(なんぐうかつい)づ。子曰(しいわ)く、君子(くんし)なるかな、
若(かく)のごとき人(ひと)。徳(とく)を尚(たっと)ぶかな、若(かく)のごとき人(ひと)、と。
現代語訳
南宮适が孔子に尋ねた。「羿は弓の名手であり、奡は大船をゆり動かすほどの大力でありましたが、いずれも非業の死をとげました。しかるに、禹と稷とはみずから耕作に従事して、ついに子孫が天子の位にのぼりました。これについての先生のご感想を承りたいと存じます。」
老師は黙っておられた。しかし、南宮适がその場を去ると、言われた。「あのような人こそ、まことの君子だ。あのような人こそ、まことに徳を尊ぶ人だ。」
英訳
Nan Gong Kuo asked to Confucius, "Yi was a virtuoso of the bow, and Ao was a great power to rock the large ship, but both of them die an unnatural death. However, Yu and Ji engaged in the cultivation voluntarily, and the descendant finally climbed to an emperor of the kingdom. I would like to hear a teacher comments on this."
The Master was silent. But when Nan Gong Kuo leaves the place,the Master was told, "That person is a true a man of virtue. That person is truly a person who respects morality."
