憲問恥。子曰、邦有道、穀。邦無道穀、恥也。克伐怨欲不行焉、可以爲仁矣。子曰、
可以爲難矣。仁則吾不知也。

憲(けん)恥(はじ)を問(と)う。子曰(しいわ)く、邦(くに)に道有(みちあ)れば、穀(こく)す。
邦(くに)に道無(みちな)くして穀(こく)すするは、恥(はじ)なり。 克(こく)・伐(ばつ)・
怨(えん)欲(よく)行(おこ)なわれざる、以(もっ)て仁(じん)と為(な)す可(べ)きか、と。
子曰(しいわ)く、以(もっ)て難(かた)しと為(な)す可(べ)し。仁(じん)は則(すなわ)ち
吾知(われし)らざるなり、と。
現代語訳
憲が恥について尋ねた。
老師が答えられた。「国に道義に基づく政治が行なわれている時、仕官するのは恥ずべきことではない。しかし、国に道義に基づく政治が行なわれていないのに、仕官するのは恥ずべきである。」
憲が尋ねた。「勝ちたがる、自慢する、怨恨、欲深い、こうしたものを抑制することができれば仁といえましょうか。」
老師が答えられた。「それができたら良いが、それだけで仁といえるかどうかは分からない。」
英訳
Xian asked about shame.
The Master was answered, "It is not shameful to get officer when politics based on morality is being done to the country. However, it is shameful to get officer though politics based on morality is not done in the country."
Xian asked, "Would you perfect virtue to like to win, brag, grudge, greedy, if it can control these things?"
The Master was answered, "I wish I could do it. I do not know whether it can be said that it is perfect virtue alone."
