二十四 子曰(しいわ)く、法語(ほうご)の言(げん)、能(よ)く従(したが)う無(な)からんや。
之(これ)を改(あらた)むるを貴(たっと)しと為(な)す。巽与(そんよ)の言(げん)、能(よ)く説(よろこ)ぶ
無(な)からんや。之(これ)を繹(たず)ぬるを貴(たっと)しと為(な)す。説(よろこ)びて繹(たず)ねず。
従(したが)って改(あらた)めず。吾(われ)之(これ)を如何(いかん)ともする末(な)きのみ。
現代語訳
孔先生の教え。正論に従わないことができるだろうか。正論に従い欠点を改めるのが良い。
相手の耳に心地よい言葉に喜ばない者は無い。その言葉の真意を求めることが大切だ。
しかし、喜ぶだけで真意を求めないものだから、欠点を改め無い人がいる。
こういう人はどうしょうもない。
英訳
Confucius teachings. Can you not follow the argument? It is good to obey the argument and renew their faults.
There is no person who is not pleased with pleasant words in the other ear. It is important to seek the true meaning of the word.
However, there is a person who does not renew the disadvantage because it is the one that the real intention is not demanded only by rejoicing.
There is no way for such a person.
