きょうは かんたん じゃない ものがたりです
Today is not an easy story
かんたんな ものがたり が もう ありません
There are no more easy stories.
わたしは にほんに いった とき うきよえを かいます
When I go to Japan, I buy ukiyo-e.
むかし きょうみを もち はじめました
I started getting interested a long time ago.
*はじめる is used in conjunction with another verb to indicate the beginning of "V (action or phenomenon).”
*きょうみを もつ Have an interest
きんじょに あたらしい みせが かいてん しました
A new store has opened nearby
わたしは みせに いきました
I went to the store
それは こっとうひんてん です
it's an antique store
いちまいの うきよえ に きょうみを もちました
I had interested in a piece of ukiyo-e.
なまえは きつねおんな くずのは が 子どもを あずける
ちいさい こどもが いえのゆか に います
There is a small child on the floor at home.
こどもの ては きものに さわっています.
A child is touching a kimono.
ははおやの こどもは きもの を きています
The mother's child is wearing a kimono.
*When a third person describes the mother, they say ``ははおや.''
きものは ながい ので ゆかを すっています
The kimono is long, so it's rubbing the floor.
ははおや は こども から はなれます
The mother leaves the child
こどもは ははおやに もどって きて ほしい
The child wants his mother back
ははおやの かおは しょうじの うしろです
Mother's face is behind Shoji.
ははおやの かおは かげでも みえます
I can see my mother's face even in the shadows.
ははおやの かおのかげ は きつね
The shadow of the mother's face is a fox
うきよえは ふしぎ です
Ukiyoe is strange
わたしは ずっと うきよえが ほしかった
I've always wanted ukiyo-e
そして それは たかく ありません でした
It wasn't expensive
わたしは しあわせ です
I'm happy
まだ それが いえに あります
I still have it at home
あとで わたしは うきよえの ものがたりについて まなびました
Later, I learned about the stories in ukiyo-e.
ある おとこは きつねを たすけました
The man saved the fox
きつねを にがして あげました
He let the fox escape
*あげます Allowing someone to do something or Giving someone the chance/ opportunity to do something
そのあとで おとこは うつくしい じょせいに あいました
Then the man met a beautiful woman.
そして けっこん しました
And got married
かのじょは にんしん しました
she got pregnant
3ねんごに つまが たすけたきつね だと きづきました
Three years later, he realized that his wife was the fox he had saved.
かれは きつねの しっぽを みました.
He saw the fox's tail
きつね は もりに もどら なければいけない
The fox must return to the forest
*なければいけない means must do, have to do, be necessary to do, need to do.
They express duty and necessity. *もどる return
なぜなら かのじょは バレてしまった からです
Because she was discovered
うきよえし よしとし 月岡芳年
かれは うつくしい うきよえ を かきます
He paints beautiful pictures
でも おそろしい うきよえも かきます
But he also draws scary ukiyo-e prints
それでも わたしは うつくしい うきよえ だけ みます
Nevertheless, I only see beautiful ukiyo-e.
