***********************************************************
a) He has two daughters who are studying music.
b) He has two daughters, who are studying music.
(=He has two daughters, and they are [both] studying music.)
***********************************************************************************************
The omission or insertion of commas may represent a difference in meaning between two otherwise identical sentences:
(例文X) They have two children who are still at school. (Defining)
(例文Y) They have two children, who are still at school. (Non-defining)
The absence of a comma after children in X implies that they have other children besides the two at school: They have two children who are still at school and (e.g.) one who goes out to work. Sentence Y, on the other hand, implies that they have only two children, both of school age.
***********************************************************************************************
1. My brother, who lives in Birmingham, is an engineer.(私の兄は、バーミンガムに住んでいますが、技師です。)
2. My brother who lives in Birmingham is an engineer.(バーミンガムに住んでいる私の兄は技師です。)
My brother is an engineer. He lives in Birminghan.
One of my brothers lives in Birmingham. This brother is an engineer.

************************************************************************************
(e) The wine which was in the cellar was ruined.
(f) The wine, which was in the cellar, was ruined.

2002年にケンブリッジ大学出版局から出版された1860ページにも及ぶ大著『The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language』(Rodney Huddleston & Geoffrey K. Pullum共著)です。
(例文ii) She had two sons she could rely on for help, and hence was not unduly worried.
(例文iの説明なので省略)In [ii] it could be that she had more than two sons (in which case the relative would be serving a distinguishing role), but an at least equally likely context is one where she had only two sons. In this context the property expressed in the relative clause does not distinguish these sons from other sons she has, but is an essential part of the reason for her not being unduly worried.
[20] i She had two sons(,) who were studying law at university(,) and a daughter(,) who was still at high school.
Example [i] could be spoken/punctuated equally readily with integrated or supplementary relatives in a context where she has just two sons and one daughter. On the supplementary reading the primary information being imparted is that she had two sons and a daughter: the information given in the relative clauses is supplementary,
secondary. On the integrated reading, by contrast, the content of the relatives is part of the main information.
************************************************************************************
************************************************************************************_
[19] ii She had two sons she could rely on for help, and hence was not unduly worried.(彼女には頼りになる二人の息子がいたため、過度に心配することはなかった。)
[20] i She had two sons(,) who were studying law at university(,) and a daughter(,) who was still at high school.
