Watching the Hakone Ekiden with Takoyaki
Today and tomorrow are the days of the Hakone Ekiden. It’s a traditional New Year’s university relay race in Japan, and my husband always looks forward to watching it because he loves jogging.Every year, we watch the Hakone Ekiden together and make takoyaki. It has become a small tradition for our family at the start of the year.My husband took out the hot plate this morning and smiled—he knows it means fresh takoyaki.I cut the octopus, cabbage, green onions, and red ginger, then mixed the flour, eggs, and water. The hot plate has 20 little holes. I poured in the batter, added the ingredients, and poured a bit more on top. As I turned each piece, they slowly became round, golden balls.Because the hot plate is electric, it takes time for everything to cook. But today we weren’t in a hurry. The slow pace matched the holiday mood, and it felt like the perfect day to make takoyaki.Thank you for reading my diary today.
