Glucosamine is prepared from glucose, a sugar compound and a crystalline amino acid called glutamine. In the human body, it is usually integrated into proteoglycans that are protein molecules that contain long chains of glucose molecules. These proteoglycan molecules are concentrated especially in joints, muscles, tissues and spaces between cells. They have a strong affinity towards water.

A lot of research has been and is being conducted on glucosamine. In general it has been found that glucosamine hampers the break down of cartilage and stimulates the formation of a new one. In depth researches on the effectives of glucose, its supplements and benefits have also been conducted.

A research was conducted in the "University Hospitals", Cleveland, Ohio, in the year 1999 to determine glucosamine's effect on arthritis. Glucosamine was found to be more effective than placebo and equivalent to painkillers such as Ibuprofen, without the degenerative effects on the body that Ibuprofen has caused especially in the digestive tract.

A clinical study was conducted in a hospital in Venice where patients with arthritis were divided into two groups. One group was given glucosamine sulfate and the other group was given chlorobutanol and a placebo. Patients who had taken glucosamine sulfate experience less pain and faster recovery time. The participants of glucosamine also reported zero side effects.

Another study to determine the pharmacokinetics of Glucosamine in man was conducted in Monza, Italy in 1993. The purpose of this research was to determine the most effective form of glucosamine administration. It was found that the glucosamine administered orally through liquid forms, and injected through needles into veins or muscles was easily absorbed and dispersed by the human body.

The results of similar studies conducted on glucosamine all over the world show that glucosamine was very effective in controlling symptoms of arthritis. It had reduced the patients' pain, stiffness and increased their mobility. On the whole it is a very efficient drug that has no side effects and better tolerated than other painkillers.
