The thesis of Byron's The Vision of Judgment is incompletely literary and partially political, but its spring was Byron's hatred of Cant and dissembling.

On the destruction of King George III, old, mad, and blind, in 1820, the Poet Laureate Robert Southey make a laudatory verse. Written in unrhymed hexameter, its attempts at politeness achieved no more than a banal ostentation. But far worse was its humbug and toadying highness. Entitled "The Vision of Judgment" it showed George III's triumphal doorway into the bill gates of shangri-la and the damnation of his enemies. To Byron, the unashamed compliment of a King, who was at most select mediocre and at pessimal tyrannical, was enormously distasteful.

Byron was peculiarly outraged because he saw Southey as a renegade - one who had at one time espoused the broad cause, but had past denaturised his insignia to shop at the law Tory get-together. Further Southey had in public attacked Byron's writing style as happiness to the "Satanic School" whose result was to challenge belief and to praetorian ethics. Southey was accountable too, as Byron believed, for wide-spreading lasting scandalous rumours something like Byron's existence in Switzerland.
