先週末は和歌山市で
過ごしました
I was in Wakayama city
last weekend.
高野山を出発する前に
必ずすることがあります
I have a ritual before
leaving Koyasan.
以前住んでいたハワイも
今住んでいる高野山も
地震が少ないので
つい油断してしまいますが、
Because there are hardly
any earthquakes both
in Hawaii and Koyasan,
I tend to relax my guard,
but
阪神淡路大震災と
東北大震災を
経験している友達から
貴重なアドバイスを
いただきました
my friend, who experienced
two catastrophic earthquakes,
gave me a valuable advice.
「出かける時は
アメちゃんとか
チョコレートは
常備した方がいいですよ。」
Whenever going out,
you should carry some
candies and chocolates.
地震に備えて...というよりは
遠足気分です
Rather than preparing for
earthquakes, I felt like
going to a field trip.
和歌山市内では
お天気にも恵まれ
(私には陽が強すぎました...)
時間もありましたが
新型コロナウイルスを考慮し
観光はしませんでした
The weather was perfect,
and I did have time but
didn’t do any sightseeing
to avoid the crowds.
ですが、
町に出ると
必ず行く場所があります
However, every time I’m
in town, I always stop by
a dollar store.
物の豊富さと
その安さに
以前は
ついつい買い過ぎましが、
I used to buy much more
stuff than I actually needed,
but
今は
本当に必要な物だけ
吟味します
I’m more cautious and buy
only the items I need.
なにせ
高野山まで持ち帰るのが
大変です
Otherwise, I will have
hard time to carry all
when I go back to Koyasan.
若い頃、
床に這いつくばり
コロコロに必死なる
母を理解できませんでしたが、
When I was much younger,
I couldn’t understand
why my mother cleaned
the carpet so frantically
with a sticky roller, however,
朝昼晩
気がつくと
コロコロを握りしめ
その中毒性を知った今、
コロコロの予備は
心の安らぎです
now that I know how addicted
I am as I use it throughout
the day, having sufficient
amount of rolls makes me
feel secured.
そして
今回町でしたいと
思っていた
もう一つのことは
米ドルから日本円への
両替です
Another thing I looked
forward to doing while
being in town was
to exchange US dollar
to Japanese yen.
以前は
高野山内の紀陽銀行で
できましたが
3月末で終了して
しまいました
Kiyo Bank in Koyasan used
to provide the service of
currency exchange but
discontinued it in March.
月曜日の朝、
JR和歌山駅前の
紀陽銀行に行きましたが
On Monday morning,
I first went to Kiyo Bank
near JR Wakayama
station.
「こちらでは
もうしておりません。」
We no longer provide
the currency exchange.
「お車ございますか？
本店で承っております。」
Do you drive?
Our main office would do.
本店の場所を聞くと
和歌山城の近くです
According to her,
their main brunch is
near Wakayama castle.
以前和歌山城まで
歩いて20分も
かかりませんでしたので
歩くのは問題ないのですが
荷物を部屋に残して来たので
11時のチェックアウトに
間に合うか気になりました
It took me not even 20 min
to walk to the castle, so
walking wasn’t problem, but
I had to check out the hotel
before 11:00 a.m.
すでに9時15分でしたが、
とりあえず銀行に向かい
歩き出しました
It was 9:15 a.m, and
I took a chance and
started walking.
購入したばかりの
お遍路用の靴を
履いて来て大正解でした
I was so glad to wear
the shoes I just bought
for pilgrimage.
クッション性が
特に優秀で
弾みながら心地よく
いくらでも歩けます
The cushion of the sole
was superb, and I was
literally bouncing
on the street.
紀陽銀行本店は
月曜日のせいか
大変な混雑でしたが
案内された為替コーナーには
誰もいませんでした
The main brunch of Kiyo Bank
was very crowded probably
because of Monday, but
there was nobody at
the currency exchange
counter.
「この米ドルは
どのようなお金ですか？」
Why do you have this money?
「どのような経由で
お手元にあるのですか？」
How did you get it?
「本日はなぜ当店に
お持ちになられたのですか？」
What brought you to
our brunch?
聞き方はとても丁寧で
嫌味な感じなど全く
ありませんが
Although she was polite
and never sounded
sarcastic,
なんとなく
後ろめたさを
感じさせられる
矢継ぎばやの質問に
the fact that she had to
ask me those questions
made me feel guilty,
but
29年のホテル業で
培った得意のスマイルと
トークでフレンドリーに
乗り切る私でした
I boldly answered
all her questions with
friendliest smile that
I mastered during
29 years of service
at the hotel.
身分証明書に
パスポートを提示したところ
パスポートに記載された住所が
ホノルルでしたため
担当の女性二人と
彼女たちの上司であろう方で
話し合いが始まりました
I presented my passport as
my ID, however, the address
written in the passport was
the address I used to live
in Honolulu, which created
a problem, and they had to talk
to their manager.
すかさず...
I immediately said
「保険証もあります。」
I also a medical insurance card.
これで問題はないだろうと
思いきや
I thought everything was
fine now, but
上司の男性は
パスポートのページを
何度もめくり、
彼たちの話し合いは
続きます
the manager kept flipping
the pages of my passport,
and they were still discussing.
やっと年配の女性が戻り
Finally, the senior clerk
came back to the counter,
and said
「あの...これですね...」
Well...
(あー、ダメか...)
Oh no...
They won’t accept it
「お手続きさせていただきます。」
We’ll go ahead to process this.
若い女性に差し出された
書類に、氏名、住所、
電話番号を記入し、
手渡すと
I wrote my full name,
the current address and
telephone number
on the form and gave it
back to the younger clerk.
「あ...」
Oh...
何かを発見した若い女性が
年配の女性にまた相談して
います
She noticed something and
reported to the senior clerk.
「お名前の字が
違うのですが...」
Your name is different.
高野山に移住するまで
知らなかったのですが
I didn’t know until I moved
to Koyasan, but
私の苗字は漢字2文字ですが
戸籍上は苗字の最初の漢字が
使ったことも見たこともない
旧漢字だったのです
the first of two kanji characters
composed for my last name
in my birth certificate
was written in old style which
I never used in my whole life.
実は
苗字の下の漢字も
本来は難しく画数が多い方
なのですが、
Even the second kanji
character of my last name
has two ways of writing,
and the one with more
strokes is official, but
銀行の通帳は
なぜか簡単で画数の少ない方の
字になっており、
somehow the bankbook
had been registered with
the simplified one.
通帳と住民票とパスポートの
苗字の2つの漢字が
全部違っていて
その時も会議になりました
Therefore, the bankbook,
passport and birth certificate
have all different combination
of the two kanji characters
of my last name.
なにはともあれ
Anyway
無事に両替を済ました私は
炎天下の中、
日傘をさし、
物凄い大股で
けやき通りを爆歩して
戻ると
After all, I could exchanged
my money and quickly
went back to the hotel,
and
チェックアウト時間
10分前の
10:50にホテルを
チェックアウトしました
I managed to check out
at 10:50, 10 min before
actual check-out time.
南海電鉄に乗ったとたん
力が抜けました
I could finally relax
as I got in to
Nankai Railway.
そして、
南海電鉄の
キーンという独特な
金属音を聞きながら
高野山に帰る喜びに
浸るのでした
The distinct sharp high-pitched
sound of Nankai Railway
resonated with Koyasan and
made me so happy to go
home.
高野四郎の鐘の音が
聞きたい.....
I missed the sound of
Koya Shiro so much.
