The wisteria stands

壇上伽藍の
准胝堂と孔雀堂の間に
ひっそりと
慎まやかに
佇んでいます
quietly and humbly
between Junteido and
Kujyakudo at Danjo Garan.
平安時代の高僧
祈親(きしん)上人定誉(じょうよ)が
1016年に高野山にお越しの際
In 1016, when the monk Kishin
came to Koyasan, it was
deserted after a destructive fire.
荒廃し、
見るも無惨な高野山を嘆き、
復興を誓いました
Lamenting the devastation,
he vowed to rebuild Koyasan.
「願掛け」に
藤を地面に逆さまに
植えました
To make the vow,
he planted a wisteria
upside down.
しばらくすると
この藤は
芽生えはじめ
Eventually,
the wisteria bloomed,
and
同時に
高野山の復興のきざしが
見え始めたということです
it was taken as a sign that
Koyasan would be restored.
昨年は
気づいた時には
散っていましたので
今年は早々に
写真を撮りましたが
It was too late to take
pictures last year, but
少々早すぎたでしょうか
I was a bit too early
this year.
奥の院の空海の御廟の側に
高野山復興の功労者である
祈親上人の霊屋があります
The monk Kishin’s mausoleum
is located right by Kukai’s
at Okunoin.

また
燈籠堂の正面には
1000年も燃え続けている
ふたつの”消えずの火”が
ありますが、
Also, there are two oil lamps
continuously burning over
1000 years in To-to-do.
その一灯は
祈親上人が献じた
「祈親灯」、
One is offered by
the monk Kishin, and
もう一灯は
白河上皇が献じた
「白河灯」です
other was from
Emperor Emeritus Shirakawa.
このふたつの
“消えずの火”は
御入定された空海の
生命のシンボルです
Those two flames represent
Kukai entering the eternal
meditation.
高野山の1,200年の歴史は
祈親上人のような
多くの功労者たちの
努力と献身の上に
脈々と続いて来ました
History of Koyasan has
been continuing for 1,200
years all because of selfless
hard work and dedication of
predecessors like the monk Kishin.
感謝の気持ちを込めて
今日も彼等の霊屋の前で
手をあわせます
I express my gratitude
every morning at
their mausoleums.
