I'm a professinal of tsugaru jamisen ,traditional three stringed Japanese musical banjo-like instrument. The tsugaru jamisen class will start in August 13th to 17th. One of shakuhachi professional friends of mine said the number of shakuhachi(also Japanese traditional bamboo vertical flute ) player in the U.S. is more than one in Japan.I think one of the reason is that Zen buddism had greatly influenced to shakuhachi. Like Aiki'do'(Japanese traditional martial arts) ,Sa'do'(tea ceremony) Ka'do' (Japanese traditonal flower arrangment)
Do is 'way' literally , All 'do' are influenced by Zen buddism ,the way of pursuing skill of something and mental traing, such as aikido, karetedo, judo.
But Japnese traditional insruments other than shakuhachi we have no ・・do.
So kyle-san might name bachido(bachi means shamisen large pick).
It's necessary to be influenced by zen to become tsugaru jamisen popular.
