The Fool
Ⅰ. <The Duke of Albany’s Palace.>
Have more than thou showest,
Speak less than thou knowest,
Lend less than thou owest,
Ride more than thou goest,
Learn more than thou trowest,
Set less than thou throwest;
Leave thy drink and thy whore,
And keep in-a-door,
And thou shalt have more
Than two tens to a score.
Ⅱ.
That lord that counsell'd thee
To give away thy land,
Come place him here by me-
Do thou for him stand.
The sweet and bitter fool
Will presently appear;
The one in motley here,
The other found out there.
Ⅲ.
Fools had ne'er less grace in a year,
For wise men are grown foppish;
They know not how their wits to wear,
Their manners are so apish!
Then they for sudden joy did weep,
And I for sorrow sung,
That such a king should play bo-peep
And go the fools among.

Fathers that wear rags
Do make their children blind;
But fathers that bear bags
Shall see their children kind.
Fortune, that arrant whore,
Ne'er turns the key to th' poor.

That sir which serves and seeks for gain,
And follows but for form,

And leave thee in the storm.
But I will tarry; the fool will stay,

The knave turns fool that runs away;

（ようく聞きな、おっちゃん。)
銭は懐に入れたら見せな、
知っていても口はつつしめ、
懐の銭を貸すのはちょっとだけ、
靴底が減る歩きより馬に乗れ、
聞いた話は鵜呑みするな、
有り金の全部は賭けるな、
酒と女にゃ手を出すな、
外にでるのもやめにして、
そうすりゃしこたま貯まるぜ、
勘定したよか貯まるぜ。
Ⅱ
お前の領地を譲ってしまえって、
あんたに進めたお方をここに出せ、
代りに、お前がその役をやってみな。
それで甘い道化と苦い道化が
ちゃんとここにひと揃いそろった、
甘いのは、道化衣装のこのおいら、 （道化が自分を指す）
苦いのは、苦い顔で立っているあんた。 （道化がリアを指す）

道化もこれじゃ廃業だなあ、
利口なやつが阿呆になり、
みんなそろって脳足りん、
見ろよあの阿呆ぶり。
娘たちはわっと嬉し泣き、
おいらはめそめそ歌ばかり、
王は「いないいないばあ」の隠れんぼ、
とうとう阿呆の仲間入り。
Ⅳ （冬はまだ続くんだな、雁があっちへ飛んでいくから。）
父親がボロを着ると、
子供は見て見ぬふり、
父親が金持ちなら、
子供は孝行のふり。
運の女神はあばずれの娼婦、
貧乏人は締め出しをくらう。

損得勘定で仕えるやつは
上っ面だけの家来さ、
雨になればさっさと逃げる、
主人は嵐の中に置いてきぼり。
だけど阿呆のおいらは残るよ、
利口が逃げたって。
だけど逃げた悪党は阿呆になるさ、
阿呆はけして悪党にはならぬ。

頭の足りない者ならば
ヘイ、ホー 今日も雨に風
みんな運だとあきらめろ、
今日も 明日も 雨ばかり。

10巻（１曲のみ）：「リア王」；第１幕４場、第２幕３場、第３場２場から。
高齢になったリア王が娘たちに国を分割して遺産相続をするが、わがままで隠居した
リア王は自分への愛情試しなど老害をまき散らす。恐ろしくも残酷な救いのない四大
悲劇のひとつ。
6つの道化の短い歌でまとめられており、「リア王」の歌が使用されるのはこの巻だけ
である。6分程度の作品。
