Installing custom content and mods in your Sims 4 game can be a bit confusing! Installing Mods in The Sims 4 The process for downloading both CC and Mods is the same, so we will cover them both at once. They are installed in Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods. Open Windows Explorer or Finder on Mac. Click your Documents folder, Electronic Arts, then The Sims 4. If you have trouble finding it, look for the Users. Download an extraction tool
When you start downloading CC, you'll notice that many of the files end in names like .zip, .rar, .7s, and so on. These files have been compressed by the custom content creator so you can download them and put them into your game. However, you can't just place a .rar or .zip file straight into your Sims 4 game. Therefore, you'll need a tool to extract these files.
I recommend using Winrar (which, despite the name, can be used in both Windows and Mac) to extract your files. You can download it here. Once you've finished downloading it, install it on your computer and move on to the next step!
Turn on Mods in Your Sims 4 Game
By default, The Sims 4 has an option to disable mods in the game. Before you get started with playing with mods and custom content, you'll need to start up your Sims 4 game and turn mods on (you'll also need to do this after each patch that is released, as the game options default back to mods being turned off).
To do this, start the game, click on the Menu button (the three buttons on the top right corner), Game Options, Other and then tick the Enable Custom Content and Mods box. Then hit the Apply Changes button and restart your game. The next time you start it up, your settings will be saved and you'll be able to play with mods!
How to download Sims 4 Mods
Now that your game is patched and you've got a proper extraction tool on your computer, it's time to download some custom content or mods that you'd like to use in your game! If you don't already have one in mind, I've written some articles on some great custom content sites and mods for the Sims 4. Feel free to browse those articles to find something of your liking!
Once you've found the content you want to add to your game, click on the download button on the website.
If you're using Google Chrome as your Internet browser, you'll see the item downloading at the bottom of the screen. Once it's done downloading, you can right-click on the little arrow, and then choose to go to the folder it's downloaded to. Typically, your downloaded items will go into your Downloads folder on your computer.
How to Install Mods
Open up the Downloads folder and then right-click on the content you've just downloaded. If you're using WinRar, you'll see an icon that looks like a stack of books. Click on the option that says, 'Extract to (mod name)'. The file will then extract into a folder.
Open up the folder and check the contents inside. Usually, you'll just see files that end with .package. This is the file-type used for Sims 4 mods and custom content. You might see some other file types too. Some creators include images of their CC or .txt ('read me') files. These can be safely discarded. If you see file types ending in .ts4script, .bpi, .blueprint or .trayitem- these are also Sims 4 file types, and I'll tell you how to install those below. Do not delete them!
Highlight (use your cursor to draw a box around) the .package files in the folder and then right-click on them and select 'cut'. Now you'll need to navigate to your Sims 4 Mods folder.
To do this, go to Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. Once you're in that folder, simply right-click anywhere and then select 'Paste.' You'll then see the .package files you've downloaded appear!
When you start up your game, the mod or CC you've installed should be there and working perfectly!
How to Install Lots
Lots are the name for houses or any types of venues that your Sims can visit in the game. You can also download custom lots to add to your game on various Sims CC websites.
Installing and downloading lots is basically the same process as above, except you place these files in a place in your Sims 4 folder.
May 28, 2019. Mar 14, 2018. These steps would insert a PDF file in the worksheet. As soon as the PDF is inserted in the worksheet, it also gets opened by default. You can close the PDF file and continue to work with Excel. Follow all the instructions above, but once you extract your files, paste them into Documents > Electronics Arts > The Sims 4 > Tray. Any download that ends in .bpi, .blueprint or .trayitem belongs in the Tray folder ONLY.
When you open up your game, you'll need to go the Gallery (click on the icon of the photos in the top right corner), then click on My Library. There, you'll find the lot you've downloaded.
If the lot also included custom content, make sure you click on the Advanced option in the Gallery and tick 'Include Custom Content' for the lot to show up.
Now you can place the lot somewhere in your game!
How to Install Script Mods
Script mods are ones which change and add-on to the scripting of the game. Things like custom careers, custom animations/interactions, and popular mods like McCommand Center and WickedWhims are all script mods.
Installing script mods is again, pretty similar to installing the other mods listed above. The main difference, however, is that the file type will end in .ts4script. For these kind of mods, you'll still put them into your Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods folder, but you'll also need to make sure in your game settings that you have Script Mods enabled.
To do so, click on the Menu (the three buttons on the top right corner), Game Options, Other, and then tick the Script Mods Allowed button. You'll see a warning about script mods. Click OK, Apply Changes, then restart your game.
Your script mod will then be working the next time you play!
Troubleshooting
If you've installed the CC or mod exactly as describe above, it should all work just fine. However, if it doesn't show up in your game, or doesn't work for some reason, you might need to do some troubleshooting. Here's a list of things to check and try when you run into problems:
- As described above, make sure you have custom content and script mods turned on in your game.
- If you can't find a particular item in Buy Mode (this is where your custom objects go), go into Buy Mode (by clicking on the tools icon or F2). Click on the Filter Items tab, select Content, then tick the Custom Content button and you'll see all your custom content. You should see the items you downloaded there.
- You can also double-check that your custom content is installed by clicking on the View Custom Content button in the Options menu (go to Options > Other and click on the View Custom Content button). Look at the files listed there and you should see the content you've downloaded listed.
- Open up your Mods folder, and make sure you've placed the CC correctly. Remember, you should only see files ending in .package or .ts4script in your mods folder. If the files are ending in .zip, .rar., or any other file type, they won't work in your game!
- While you're online, go into Origin and repair your game. You can do this by clicking on The Sims 4 in your library, selecting the Settings button, and then clicking on Repair Game (please note that you must not be playing the game when you select this option). The game will then repair itself and basically do a fresh install of the files needed to run The Sims 4. It won't damage your save game, and this has actually fixed broken CC (particularly issues with script mods) for me in the past.
- Try deleting your .cache files. To do this, go into Documents > Electronics Arts > The Sims 4 folder. You can delete the localthumbscache.package file in this directory. You'll also see a folder titled cache and one titled cachestr. You can delete everything in these folders, but not the folder themselves. You may also safely delete the entire onlinethumbnailcache folder, if present. Deleting cache files allows the game to 'fix' itself in a way, and can be done as a first resort before repairing your entire game.
- Re-download the mod and start over. Sometimes, download can be corrupted upon downloading them, so just in case, you can delete the files your first downloaded, download them again, and put them into your mods folder and see if it works.
- Check that the mod itself is up-to-date. With the Sims 4, nearly every time a patch comes out, it breaks a variety of mods. Usually, the mod's creator will be aware of this and will update his or her website to notify players of this. Check the page you downloaded the mod from and then delete and reinstall the new version, if necessary. Sims websites like SimsVIP also keep a running tab of incompatible mods and CC after patches.
- Remember that game mods and custom content are designed to work with genuine versions of The Sims 4. There is no guarantee that they will work with pirated versions of the game, so if you do have a pirated version and a mod isn't working, that could be why. The only way to fix this would be to buy a copy of The Sims 4 directly from Origin, where you can ensure the game will be patched regularly and compatible with all mods and custom content.
If you've tried all the troubleshooting methods and the mod/custom content still won't work, the best thing to do is contact the original creator and let them know. Give them a detailed example of what's happening in the game (i.e. 'Whenever I place down the couch I downloaded, an error message comes up and says 'script call failed'). Hopefully they'll get back to you with an updated version of the content or a way to work around the error. If not, you may just need to uninstall the file from your game.
How to uninstall sims 4 mods
Uninstalling CC and Mods is as simple as going to your Mods folder and deleting them. Right-click on whichever file you want to get rid of, select Delete, and then the next time you start up the game, that custom content or mod will no longer be in your game.

What is an archive?
A zip, rar, or 7z file is what is known as an 'archive' file. An archive is sort of like a folder on your computer. It has its own name and location, and it can contain other files and folders inside of it. An archive is a bit better than a folder, though, as the files inside it are compressed, so the space taken up on your computer is smaller. This also makes it faster to download, as there's less data being sent.
Opening an archive file and uncompressing the contents to use elsewhere is known as extracting. You will usually need a special program on your computer to extract from most archive files (though your computer may already know how to do this with zip files). There are many programs that can extract from archives, some better than others.
What is 7-Zip?
7-Zip is a program that will allow you extract from archive files. It can also create archive files, which is useful if you want to share stuff you've made on MTS in future.
7-Zip is completely safe to use and is totally free, forever. MTS recommends 7-Zip because it is an easy to use program, and because we know it won't harm your computer or ask you for money.
7-Zip works with pretty much all Windows operating systems, including XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

Where to get 7-Zip
Get 7-Zip from: www.7-zip.org - that is the official site for 7-Zip. While it can be gotten elsewhere, those will be the latest updated files, and they are safe (no viruses!).
Downloading 7-Zip
7-Zip comes in two versions: an .exe version for 32 bit operating systems, and an .msi version, for 64 bit operating systems. You need to download the correct version for your system.
- How to tell if you have a 32 bit or 64 bit OS: If you are using Windows XP or Vista, 99% chance you have a 32 bit OS. You really only need to check if you are running Windows 7..
- Go to Start > Control Panel.
- Click on the System icon. You'll get a window that has 'View basic information about your computer' at the top.
- Look in the list under the 'System' heading. Look next to 'System type:' - it will say either '32-bit Operating System' or '64-bit Operating System' there.
Then you just download whichever is the appropriate version for your OS: either the 32 or 64 bit version. Save it to your computer somewhere you can find it - your computer's Desktop is easy enough.
Installing 7-Zip
To install 7-Zip, double-click on the .exe or .msi file you downloaded. You'll get a standard install program.
- 32-Bit OS: Just click Next through the prompts to install with the default settings.
- 64-Bit OS: Click Next through most of the prompts. When it asks where you want to install the program, click Browse and change it from C:Program Files7-Zip to C:Program Files (x86)7-Zip
Click Finish on the last prompt, and 7-Zip will be installed. Just to be safe, reboot your computer to make sure all the changes take effect.
Extracting From Archives
After 7-Zip is fully installed, you should be able to download any .zip, .rar, or .7z file normally - just click the Download link from MTS or elsewhere, save it somewhere easy to find on your computer (like a folder on your Desktop) and wait until it's finished downloading.
Then, you can right-click on the file to extract it directly to that folder - right-click, 7-Zip > Extract Here.
You will see the new files appear in that folder alongside the .zip, .rar, or .7z archive they were contained in. If you have multiple archive files (even of different types) you can select all of them, right-click, 7-Zip > Extract Here.

The original .zip, .rar, or .7z file can be deleted - all you need are the extracted files, not the original archive(s).

Issue
I’ve added mods/custom content to my game but it doesn’t show up.
Cause
Visio professional 2013 link 64 bit windows 7. There are several causes why the custom content doesn’t show up.
- Mods/CC and/or script mods aren’t turned on in your options
- The game is using a different folder than the one you’ve added your mods to
- It’s showing up but in a different place
- The mod/cc you’ve added is no longer compatible with the game.
Solution
Sometimes it’s all of the custom content, sometimes it’s only part of it.
I’ve compiled a list of things you can try below.
None of my custom content/mods is showing up
Sims 4 Zip File Download
- Make sure you have mods/cc turned on in your game options. If you are using script mods, make sure that is also turned on. Be aware that each major patch turns the custom content/mods off. This is not for fun but to protect your game from incompatible mods. All mods/cc can potentially lead to issues if the game code is updated and hence they are turned off. Please make sure your mods/cc are all compatible with a patch before turning the option back on.
- Especially after an update, the game can be triggered to to use oneDrive or iCloud instead of your local user folder, leading to all mods/cc being missing. In this case, usually your save games are also missing. Check out this post on how to find out which user folder the game is using: How to find your user folder. Do make sure that the path of the folder you’ve added the mods to exactly matches. It’s also very easy to accidentally move a folder on Windows in which case, you could be looking at a folder within a folder. A good test for this is also that if you remove the mods folder completely, the game should automatically create a new one if you start the game. If it doesn’t, a different folder is used.
- Most files you download are either .zip, .rar or .7z files. You need to unpack them first and put the actual package/ts4script files into the mods folder. Tools like 7zip or WinRar are needed for most archive files.

Extracting Sims 4 Cc Zip Files For Mac Free
- Check the mod list ingame to see if there are any of the mods/cc missing. The ones that are not listed there will most probably not be showing up ingame. There are several reasons why they are not showing and most likely should be removed. There are two sections. One for Custom Content and Tuning mods (Custom Content) and one for Script Mods. Some parts of Script mods also appear under custom content which is correct and nothing to worry about. The package file of the mod show up under custom content, the ts4script as script mods.
- ScriptMods appear also appear in the list, if you have them still in ZIP format (not unpacked). The problem ist that they don’t work in this state. I’m guessing they’re still being displayed as installed as ScriptMods used to be in Zip-File format at the beginning of Sims 4. Make sure you always unpack zip archives.
- Make sure that none of the custom content you downloaded is for Sims 2 or Sims 3. Once downloaded, they are hard to tell apart as they are all package files. You can use tools such as the Mod conflict detector to detect them.
- Some mods/cc can conflict with each other. You can use tools such as the Mod conflict detector to detect them (be aware that this tool can only detect conflicts between mods/cc and not between the game and mods/cc).
- Make sure they are still compatible with the game. The Internet is a great source for that. Also check with the creator or read comments on the page where you got the mod from.
- Batch fix your custom content with Sims 4 Studio. This only works for custom content and not mods. This doesn’t always help so you might just need to remove the custom content that’s not showing up.
- Recolors need the original mesh. If you download something that you don’t have (cause the original is another custom content or part of a pack you don’t own), they will not show up although you can probably see them on the list.
- Make sure to read the description of the download as to where it could be. Sometimes a something is a tattoo that you expect to be makeup or otherwise weirdly categorized.
- I advise against downloading entire mod folder from the net. You don’t know what you’re downloading and how outdated the things are. This can lead to issues. Always find the original creators and download from them (it’s also a curtsy to the original creator)
- Downloaded Sims and houses belong in the tray and not the mods folder. The file you download may not include the custom content it has used so make sure to read instructions.
- Script Mods can’t be in sub-folders or they will not show up. They usually consist of several files. Create one folder and put all files to that mod into that folder. That folder has to be within the mods folder and not in sub-folders.
- The Resource.cfg that gets generated by the game allows for up to 5 nested sub-folders. Don’t go deeper than that or the mods won’t show up.
- If you have issues with some cc/mods not showing up, try them in groups and don’t add too many in one go.
