Fukui Prefecture: Eyeglasses met in the Boston Club in the city of Sabae 福井県 〜鯖江のボストンクラブで触れる眼鏡〜
What do you think of when you see the word "Sabae"? In kanji (Chinese letters), it means "a cove full of mackerels." Fukui Prefecture is famous as a place where many mackerels are caught. Fukui's grilled mackerel is delicious😊! It has been known for a long time that the road "Wakasa Kaido" that connects Fukui and Kyoto has transported Fukui's mackerel (together with other Wakasa specialties) to the ancient capital.
「鯖江」と聞いて、あなたは何を思い浮かべるだろう。あなたが日常的に漢字を使うなら、その字面から「鯖がたくさ ん棲んでいる入江」と思うかもしれない。実際、福井県は鯖 がたくさん獲れる場所として有名だ。福井の鯖の塩焼きは美味しい😋！それは古から知られている事実で、福井と京都を結ぶ道「若狭街道」は福井の鯖(と合わせて、若狭の名産品)を古都へ運ぶために発達してきた。

Sabae City, which has a long history in Fukui Prefecture, can be called a "sacred place of eyeglass frames," with a 95% share of the domestic market for eyeglass frame production and 20% of the overseas market. According to this chapter, the "three major eyeglass production areas in the world" are Italy, China, and Japan (Sabae City), and Sabae succeeded in making the world's first eyeglass frame using light and tenacious metal "titanium." The city is known for its high technology and good quality.
そんな歴史ある福井県にある鯖江市は、眼鏡フレームの生産で国内シェアは95%超、海外でも20%になるという、「眼鏡の聖地」と呼べるだろう。本章によると「世界三大眼鏡産地」はイタリア、中国、日本(鯖江市)で、鯖江は軽くて粘りのある金属「チタン」を使い、世界で初めてチタン製眼鏡フレームを作ることに成功、その技術の高さ、品質のよさで知られているそうだ。
In Chapter 18, Sabae's glasses frames are selected as "日本製 〜Nihon-Sei〜" in Fukui Prefecture.
第18章では、福井県の日本製として、その鯖江の眼鏡フレームがチョイスされている。
Haruma Miura explains the reason for choosing it in this chapter as follows: "It was a time when I was personally interested in eyewear, and when I read an article about "smart glasses (eyeglass-type wearable terminals)," I thought, "The fusion of traditional industrial technology and cutting-edge technology, which leads to the future, is in line with '日本製 〜Nihon-Sei〜.'"... Those glasses frames are Japanese products that are "inherited" from the past and will be to the future, which is appropriate for the keyword "inheritance," one of the themes running through this book.
三浦春馬さんはその理由を本章で次のように述べている。個人的にアイウェアに興味がわいていた時期」であり、”スマートグラス(眼鏡型ウェアラブル端末)”の記事を読み、「伝統的な産業としての技術力と最先端のテクノロジーが融合して、未来につながっていくところが 『日本製』と合っているなと思った（後略）。本書「日本製」に流れているテーマの一つ、「継承」というキーワードにふさわしい、過去より「継承」されてきた日本製であり、未来へと「継承」されていくだろう日本製である。
Haruma visited the eyeglass frame planning and design company "Boston Club," founded in Sabae in 1984. Mr. Kazumi Komatsubara, the company's representative, lectured on the history and current status of Sabae glasses. The manufacture of eyeglasses began in 1905 in Sabae and had a long history as a local industry. The directors of the movie "The Matrix," the Wachowski brothers (at the time of the movie's release, now the Wachowski sisters), commissioned the glasses frame company to produce the sunglass frames used in the film. In this chapter, we see a glimpse of Haruma in a good mood, wearing the same sunglasses worn by the main character, "Neo." It's easy to understand his feelings! As an actor, if there had been the opportunity to come into contact with such a world-famous blockbuster movie, he would have had no choice but to smile.
春馬さんの訪問先は、1984年に鯖江で創業した眼鏡フレーム企画デザイン会社『ボストンクラブ』。代表の小松原一身さんから、鯖江の眼鏡について、歴史や現状のレクチャーを受ける。地場産業としての歴史は古く、1905年には眼鏡の製造が始まったそう。ボストンクラブは映画「マトリックス」の監督のウォシャウスキー兄弟(映画公開当時、現ウォシャウスキー姉妹)より依頼を受け、映画でも使われた眼鏡フレームを制作している。本章では、主人公の「ネオ」が着けていたサングラスと同じものをかけ、ご機嫌になった春馬さんが垣間見れるが、その心理、容易に理解できる！俳優として、あのような世界的大ヒット映画にふれる機会があれば、頬が緩むしかないだろう。
After Mr. Komatsubara's lecture, Haruma experienced "Neoplug" glasses equipped with a digital device attachment/detachment function at the Boston Club lab. He confessed that he was lacking in the study, but this trip has given him a deep insight into Sabae's high technology and trust and the potential of smart glasses.
小松原さんのレクチャー後、ボストンクラブのラボにて、 デジタルデバイスの着脱機能を備えた眼鏡「ネオプラグ」を体験。春馬さんは勉強不足と自ら告白しているが、この旅を通じて、鯖江の技術力の高さや信頼、スマートグラスの可能性について深く感じることがあったようだ。
Haruma must have got a lot of inspiration from the "future of eyeglasses," which continues to take on new challenges on a solid tradition. That was the trip to know "日本製 〜Nihon-Sei〜" in the Fukui Prefecture.
ゆるぎない伝統の上に、新しい挑戦を続けている 「眼鏡の未来」からインスピレーションをうける、福井県の日本製を知る旅はそんな旅だったのではと想像する。
It is common for people to want "something new." But it may not be born from a special place. So this chapter is to be read, pondering the "innovation" from the accumulation of mundane daily life.
「新しいもの」を求めることは人の常であるけれど・・・。それは、特別なところから生まれてくるわけではないのかもしれない。ありふれた日常を重ねてこそ生まれてくる「革新」について、思いを馳せながら読みたい章である。
As an actor and singer, Haruma spent his days practicing sword fighting and singing lessons fervently. His attitude toward life and Sabae's glasses seem to overlap. It is my honest impression after reading it.
俳優として歌手として、日々、殺陣の稽古や歌のレッスン黙々とこなしていたという春馬さん。彼の生きる姿勢と鯖江の眼鏡フレームが重なって見えてくる。読後の率直な感想である。
