前回のブログを更新してから、1ヶ月以上が経ってしまいました。

授業も始まってから、今週で6週か7週目に入りました。このセメスターは3単位×６科目で18単位取っているので、ほどよく忙しい日々を過ごしています。前期よりは、授業を受講することやアメリカでの生活に慣れたことにより、気持ち的に余裕をもって、より楽しく、生活することが出来ています。
今回のブログは、アメリカと日本での土木工学の一般的な捉え方の違いについて、書こうと思います。
初めて会った人との会話で、その人の専門（Major）を聞くことや聞かれることは本当によくあることです。
日本で専門が土木工学だと答えると、市役所で働くの？とか公務員になるんだね。みたいな返答がよく返ってきます。一般的によく知られていない学問なので、ださいみたいな印象があると思います。そして、工学部の中では、あまり人気がない学科と言っても、過言ではないと思います。
一方で、アメリカで専門が土木工学を答えると、Engineeringと言うだけで「賢い」というイメージがあり、Civil Engineerなら将来は「お金持ちになるね」みたいな返答がよく返ってきます。実際に、Civil Engineerは、アメリカでは比較的給料の高い部類の職業になるので、人気の職業だと思います。学生の数も、他の学部と比べたら多いと思います。
土木工学の一般的な捉えられ方は、結構違いがあるなと、こっちに来てから感じています。

Today, I’d like to talk about the differences of between civil engineering in the U.S. and in Japan. I realize the differences of what people think of civil engineer since I’ve settled here. It is pretty common that people will ask what someone’s major is, especially when we don’t know so much.
In the U.S., when I answered my major, they were like “Oh, you are smart” or “you are gonna make a lot of money in the future”.
On the other hand, in Japan, they were like “what the heck is civil engineering?” or “okay, you are gonna work for government as a civil servant”. Generally speaking, civil engineering is not cool to study compared to other engineerings. In fact, civil engineering is neither popular nor common in Japan. Honestly, when someone asks my major, I don’t want to answer my major over there lol, cuz they are like “okay, that’s nice. (they don’t even know what civil engineer is.)” Of course, to make my opinion clear, I didn’t mean at all that civil engineer is wack or something.
