Good evening!
A very cold and wet day
... I hope the weekend is much nicer!
Last week I took my friend Melody to try some "Okonimiyaki"
.
Okonomi= "what you like" or "what you want", "to your liking".
Yaki= "to cook" or "to grill".
Okonomiyaki can best be described as "Japanese pancakes"
(but not sweet!) or Japanese pizza
and is associated with the Osaka (Kansai region)and Hiroshima.
The batter is made out of dashi stock, flour
eggs
cabbage
and grated yam
.
You can add almost anything to this basic batter: meat
seafood
or cheese
!
Of course, the best part is cooking the Okonomiyaki on a "teppan" (iron grill).
If you go to a restaurant equipped with a grill, you are given the batter to cook yourselves!
Many foreign visitors like the taste of the okonomiyaki sauce which is similiar to Worcestershire Sauce
, but sweeter and tastier
!
So... what did she think
Monjayaki
No thank-you!![]()
(Monjayaki is similiar to Okonomiyaki, but a speciality of the Kanto region. It's batter is much more liquid, and when cooked it's consistency is similary to uncooked batter...)

Delicious!
