いくつかのイディオムを紹介しています。
いろんなイディオム、表現があるなぁと思って
毎週楽しみにしているのですが、
オンライン辞書などで調べても日本語訳がでてこないものがほとんど
まだまだ知られていないものがたくさんあるといいますか、
本場アメリカで使われているイディオム、
まだまだあるんだなぁって思います。
イディオムって使えたらかっこいいなぁって思うのですが
なかなか覚えられなかったり、
使いにくかったり・・・
でも日本語でもよく使われている表現に
似ているものならどうでしょう？
例えば、「水と油」が
「Apples and Oranges」
微妙な違いがまたおもしろい
"You can't compare American football players with soccer players.
It's apples and oranges."
のように使います。
他にも
「氷山の一角」
「The Tip of the Iceberg」
“I'm afraid your son failing his history test is just the tip of the iceberg: he's doing poorly in every subject this year!”
「心臓が止まるほど驚く」
「Heart-Stopping」
“Finding out that my brother barely survived a car crash was a heart-stopping moment.”
「右の耳から左の耳に抜ける」
「In One Ear and Out the Other」
“I tried to remember the names of the people at the party, but it went in one ear and out the other.”
まだまだたくさんあります！
