子供がお友達の１歳のお誕生日会に招待されました。
ブラジルでは、お金をかけられる人は専用の業者に頼んで豪勢なパーティを開催します。特に１歳の誕生日は盛大。パーティのテーマによってリアルミッキーやミニー、白雪姫と七人の小人などが登場します。
サンパウロにいた頃、イギリス人友人が「もう見栄の張り合いよー！周りの親は平均９０００レアル（日本円約４５万）かけるけど、私は５０００レアルに抑えた」と話していましたが「それでも日本円２５万かかるのか‥‥」と思った記憶あり。写真では伝わりませんが、今回のお誕生日会も超豪華でした。
招待ばかりされているのもなんだし、来年同じようにやらないといけないのかなーと考えている自分がいて、親になったんだなーと改めて実感。ちなみにダンナは「一度くらいブラジル流にド派手な誕生会をやってみるのも良い経験じゃない？」とのこと。そうだとしても何十万もかけたくない（かけられない）んだけど‥‥
「お、おまえそこにいたのか！」鏡越しにこちらの姿に気付き、笑顔。丸４ヶ月になりました。
"Oh, I see you now!" Love that smile. 4 months.
Having a birthday party in Brazil is all about keeping up with the Jones, a friend once told me. "Can you believe I have to spend 5000 reais (US$2500) on my children's party?? And this is still cheeper than the 9000 reais (US$4500) parties I go too!!" she said (she's British, by the way, so our spending habits are similar).
These parties are like wonderland, and you'll be greeted by Mickey and Minnie, or maybe even Snow white and the seven dwarfs, seriously (in Brazil, there are specialized companies that plan and carry out parties for you). The pic above is from the very first party my son was invited to the other day. You can't tell from the shot, but this too was another hyper luxurious one.
So here I am thinking whether or not I should have a Brazilian style birthday party next year for the little man (the first party is considered the most important). Would spending several thousand reais on a one year old's party be a good way to experience Brazilian culture if we did it just once like hubby suggests?
....nah, I think I'll be good with a home made cake.
