また、勝負へのこだわりを選手たちに強く求めたことも高く評価したい。親善試合、しかも新しいメンバーで準備時間のない中での試合ということで、勝ち負けだけで考えれば、相当難しい試合だったはずだ。ただ、そういう状況の中でも、アギーレ監督は選手たちに「勝つこと」を強く求めた。おそらくアギーレ監督は、勝利を強く求めることで、今回の親善試合を、少しでも真剣勝負の場に近づけて、その状況下で選手たちの能力を見極めたい、と考えたのだろう。限られた強化スケジュールの中で、そういった「工夫」を実施することは、代表監督として非常に重要なことである。
そういったポジティブな面もある一方で、疑問に感じる点もある。それは、「このやり方でアジアカップを勝てるのか」ということだ。過去の日本代表の戦いぶりを見ても、アジアカップは決して簡単に勝てるような大会ではない。むしろ、しっかりとした準備が必要なレベルの大会である。しかし、アギーレ監督は、ベネズエラ戦の前日会見で「アジアカップ前の残り5試合は、選手を観察するために使う」と明言している。ただでさえ、新しいシステムにより、経験ある選手たちのプレーにも戸惑いが感じられる状態なのに、本当に選手の観察だけに残りの試合を費やしていいのか。それで本当にアジアカップに勝てるチームが作れるのか。忘れてはいけないのが、アジアカップで勝たなければ、当然、コンフェデレーションズカップの出場権も得られないのだ。
