こんなダイアローグがありました

Nancyが、

I don't want to use it to screen calls.
I don't think it's right.

「電話をえり分けるためみたいにそれを使いたくないのよ。
いいことだとは思わないわ」

と言っています。

screen calls は、まずは留守電に取らせて出るかどうか決める、
ということなんですね。

では日本語を英語にしてみましょう。

「ユミはセールス電話に出たくないから、まず、留守電に取らせる。」

Yumi doesn't want to talk to salespeople so she is screening calls.

Yumi is screening calls, because she doesn't want to talk to salespeople.

また、電話に出ないで留守電に取らせるという英語に

let the machine pick up という表現もあります。

「ユミは電話に出ない。いつも留守電に録音させる。」　

Sayuri doesn't answer the phone. She always lets the machine pick up.

ちなみに、一般的な留守電電話メッセージは　（一人暮らしの場合）

Hi, This is ～. (I'm) sorry I can't come to the phone right now.

Please leave a message after the beep. I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you.

「こちらは○○です。ただ今電話に出られません。発信音の後にメッセージを

残してください。折り返しすぐこちらからかけ直します」

なお、私は留守電にメッセージ残すのが苦手です
