イーグルスの「ホテルカリフォルニア」
（けして、カリフォルニア観光協会のＰＲ音楽では、ありませんよ。）
それは、１９７０年代の米国での出来事。
西海岸のカリフォルニア。
そこは、明るい太陽の日差し。
ハリウッドで大成功をおさめ、富と自由と名声を、手に入れる事ができるところ。
若者達は、ハイウェイで東から西へ目指す。
しかし、そこで見たものは、朽ち果てた「ホテルカリフォルニア」。
１９００年初頭に建てられた、超名門ホテル。
でも、今は、麻薬とドラッグの取り引きが常習的に行なわれる、地に落ちたホテルの姿。
そして、そのホテルとは、ベトナム戦争で病んだ米国の姿そのもの、だったのです。

来た道、元の場所に戻る道路を求めて必死に探す
すると、ホテルの夜警がこんな事を僕に言うのである

でも、ココを立ち去る事は、不可能です・・。
美しいメロディと、比喩的に表現された歌詞が、なかなか本当のこの歌の意味が、理解されないみたいです。
途中の歌詞で、こんな事も言います。
「その様なワイン（魂）は１９６９年以降から置いて御座いません」と支配人に告げられた。
１９６９年の、ウッドストックがあった年に、かけているのですが・・
つまり、米国の、華やかな健全な繁栄も、開拓者精神も、そこまでだったと、言いたいのです。
この曲が発表されたのは、１９７６年ですが・・
今の、地に落ち果てた、アメリカをも物語ってませんか？

僕がイーグルスの曲の中で一番好きな曲です。
