いやダラダラやっていたらこれだけで1日が終わってしまった。
まあでも今日はかなり文章を精読しました。
軽い課題ですね、「週末のうちにやっておいてね」的なやつ。
クイズは今クラス(Problems of Democracyという授業)で読んでいる本、"Democracy in America"から。

邦訳も出てますね。

日本語でも読んでみたいです。
1835年に出版されたのに、未だに輝きを放っています。
緻密にアメリカにおける民主主義を分析している。
肯定、否定に片寄らずにあくまで客観的に鳥瞰している点がグッドですね。
あとはトクヴィル自身の目でみた上で考察してるとあって、リアリティがあります。
以下が課題。

(1) What does Tocqueville mean by his distinction between egoism and individualism, and how does freedom of association relate to this?
Both individualism and egoism seek beliefs within themselves. Whereas egoism leads man to prefer himself above everything, individualism is softer and somewhat more flexible. Individualism tends to spring up from democracy, accompanying with equality of social conditions.
Free association functions in two different ways. Firstly, it unites individuals together for a stable and civilized society. In addition, it takes the place of those powerful and competent individuals who have been swept away by the equality of social conditions and eventually prevents from barbarism.
(2) What effects does equality have on morals, marriage, and religion?
Equality has crucial effects on morals, marriage and religion. Equality of social conditions, without any doubt, helps morality, which will eventually enhance the significance of religion and marriage within its society. It creates respects among people. By sharing them, it wouldn’t be a rupture between different religions nor be disdain among different sexes. It enables men and women to accomplish their respective tasks as effectively as possible.
(3) What kind of despotism does Tocqueville think Americans should fear, and why does he think they should fear it?
American should fear a completely new form of despotism which ancients had never experienced. At first glance, it does not seem to be despotism; rather people perceive it as a guardian. It does not tyrannize but it inhibits, represses, drains, snuffs out its citizens, their ideas, opinions, needs and such.
Tocqueville thinks they should fear it because it reduces daily the value and frequency of the exercise of free choice; it restricts the activity of free will within a narrower range and gradually removes autonomy itself from each citizen.
