How the final hardware specs compare

PS4 vs. Xbox One: RAM subsystem and bandwidthOnce we leave the CPU/GPU, the hardware specs of the Xbox One and PS4 start to diverge, with the RAM being the most notable difference. While both consoles are outfitted with 8GB of RAM, the PS4 opts for 5500MHz GDDR5 RAM (similar to what you find on a modern graphics card), and the Xbox One uses 2133MHz DDR3 RAM (the same as the main RAM in your PC). This leads to an absolutely massive bandwidth advantage in favor of the PS4 the PS4 CPU and GPU will have 176GB/sec of bandwidth to system RAM, while the Xbox One will have just 68.3GB/sec.

Xbox One SoC block diagram. The 32MB of ESRAM (four blocks of 8MB) is at the bottom.

In Microsoft favor, the Xbox One has 32MB of super fast embedded SRAM (about 102GB/sec in each direction, for a total of 204GB/sec of bandwidth). If this ESRAM is used properly, as a cache, then it possible that the huge difference in main system RAM bandwidth can be ameliorated. This will most likely come down to individual developers (do they have the time and inclination to use the ESRAM?), and whether Microsoft makes it easy to use the ESRAM efficiently. It worth noting that the Xbox 360 used embedded DRAM, so it highly likely that Microsoft and developers will know how to make the most of it.

PS4 vs. Xbox One: What difference will the hardware specs make in games? It nice to be able to compare hardware specs in a straightforward fashion especially if you a PlayStation fan, as it clearly beats the Xbox One on paper. When it comes down to it, though, the specs mean nothing on their own: It entirely down to how Microsoft, Sony, and game developers actually use the hardware. To b Air Max Rea egin with, we would expect games on the PS4, with its beefier GPU and simpler memory subsystem, to be smoother and prettier. We have already seen this borne out by games such as Battlefield 4, where the PS4 outputs at 1600 but the Xbox One outputs at just 1280 a difference that is almost perfectly explained by the PS4 50% more powerful GPU.

Despite the resolution difference and upscaling, though, there is visually very little difference between the Xbox One and PS4. By virtue of being based on the same GPU architecture, games on both consoles will look very, very similar the same lighting, the same textures (presuming the Xbox One lower bandwidth isn a bottleneck), the same smoke, and so on. If you are playing games from a reasonable distance (10 feet, 3 meters), you are unlikely to see much, if any difference between the consoles.

With that said, irrespective of whether developers can harness the Xbox One ESRAM, I don think Microsoft console will ever compete with the PS4 larger GPU. I think the PS4 will always have the edge when it comes to raw graphics power, and thus higher output resolution and smoother frame rates. In reality, due to commercial restraints, I expect most cross platform games will look virtually identical across the two consoles for their entire lifecycle. PS4 exclusives that take full advantage of the console superior hardware, though, such as masterpieces produced by Naughty Dog, will probably look significantly better than anything on the Xbox One.

Tagged InI guess my big question is why do I need one of these? When the PS3 came out the graphics were pretty amazing compared to a mid range PC. In addition there were many games made for the PS3 (and xbox 360) that were unavailable for the PC since no one wanted to take the trouble and port them over.

But if these new consoles are using x86 architecture then all the games made for them should run on PCs without the need to recompile.

I guess I having a hard time figuring out how these are different from a PC, except for branding. Maybe I not understanding something

I live in India. CoD ghosts is about $75 on pre order for the ps3. Games are becoming more expensive. It will definitely be more for the PS4 and the Xbox One. When developers end up bringing some old games to new consoles and make new ones, you really can expect them to be cheap. I expect prices of about $100 US for any game. That why I giving up on consoles and shifting to a PC. They have always been significantly cheaper on PC in the past and they will continue to be so 5 years from now. Upgrade your PC GPU to a gtx 770 or something if you don have a high end GPU already. It last you at least 5 years without any problems and you end up getting better frame rates and graphics.

THis is really a moot point on a modern PC. Most all of PC games now auto update with game patches just like consoles do. In addition, that goes for the video card drivers. So what was a difference is moot now. The PC doesn require the same level of TLC with Windows 7 and beyond. It automatically updated. And virus are still a threat to a console and hacking more than a pc. Example, the largest hack in history was the PSN network. So I don find any of your points relevant in todays modern world.

K download geforce experience. Downloads all of your drivers for you, automatically optimizes game settings on your pc for highest framerates. Put a porn block so your perverted children are not fapping on your gaming station, and most of all, man the fuck up and stop being so lazy. Eaze of use? How much easier can double clicking an icon be? What about ease of invasion of privacy with xbox one that doesn turn you off? How about 100$ per AAA game in the near future, whilst steam has $5 games of the same quality. I don know, I can see your argument, but to me it sounds like you are ill informed about how easy a PC is to use in this era. Not only that, But everything you mentioned is false or can be used in other context. For instance, 100% of cod 4 games on xbox 360 have hacked lobbies. Secondly, how the FUCK can you have a patch. That is literally the dumbest thing you could have ever said. Everybody gets the same patch, its a fucking update from the game DEV, not something you choose at a store. You are just slightly behind the times, and you have literally no idea what you are talking about. After wording all of this however, I agree with you. Buy a console, please. Stay away from my domain.

Alex, if you have to use profanity, you are taking my comments way to seriously. The other commentators managed to make similar arguments without having to resort to the lowest common denominator of language. Although you make several good points, it all lost on me because of your rudeness. Honestly, if you play like you write, I wouldn want to be part of your domain anyway.

And, no, I am not lazy. As a software engineer for the past 30 years, the last thing I want to do when I get home is deal with computers. I find consoles simpler and they meet my sons needs. Others feel differently, which is fine. Why my personal opinion matters that much to you that it warranted such language, I not sure. is literally the dumbest thing you could have ever said. This irritates me enough that I feel compelled to respond. Do you play Minecraft? My boys do. The way to do mods in that game, I contend there is such a thing as a patch. The more recent versions of that game have a greatly streamlined way of adding mods, but I don know how many nights I spent trying to make sure that some mod matched up with the same version that they were running which then had to match another mod but didn quite work with the version of this and that. You get the picture. Yes, that does make the PC version of Minecraft better, in my opinion, but it a heck of lot easier for my kids to play the Xbox version with their friends than the PC version.

I have to agree with you mitest1234 that the language was unwarranted, but his points were accurate. You were talking about a Minecraft which is not a patch. I understand that you are talking about certain patches working with certain mods, but that does not change the fact that there is no patch other then the latest ones that get released (hoping they themselves are not bugged) regardless of what mod you want. Having other mods has is a choice that has n Nike Free Sverige othing to do with the patches.

I think the fact that you have some knowledge on computers has put you in a position to be able to see the finer workings of any problems it might have. But that also shows how little you know about consoles. When a average computer user is playing a PC game they will find it just as easy to use as a console because they do not need to think about how it works, it just does.

Overall I found this entire thread to be a rather amusing Steam commercial, which I am also guilty of being a fan of the Steam sales.

so your saying with console games you dont have to wait for updates. if you havent buy me a keyvault and ill inject it into my jtag and show you first hand with your own private lobby.

SteamOS looks to make all driver and patches go through in the background, and im sure there will be some security with it as well. but nothing is unhackable man.

how much more convenient does it get to come home from a long day of work turn on your steam machine/bootup steamOS sit back and choose a game?

then in 2 years when you see the game engines getting ahead of your hardware you take the $1000 you saved in steam sales over $100 per game console titles you can grab a new cpu/gpu more ram and be fit once again for years.

With console your gonna pay out the ass and be stuck paying out the ass for 10 years while game engines evolve and fly right by you.

Well in order to run hacked lobbies in games like cod you need to have an Xbox capable of running unsigned code. In order to do this the console needs to be modified/hacked. Something I always found funny on mine was that when I sit on the retail nand and switch over to the rgh hand on mine the temp will be like 182 F. After playing a graphics intense game from the rgh nand and then dash boarding the temp is like 148 F. Sitting Idle at the dashboard on rgh nand the temp tops out at 113 F. So basically the hacked hand keeps my trinity Xbox 360 running nice and cool, while just the dash of the retail is burning it up. Screen caps and video were already capable on the rgh Xbox. Installing bigger hard drives outside of proprietary Xbox HDD is capable with rgh. Games load faster on rgh.
