RakutenMobile international roaming usage report

This May, I went to Berlin, Catania in Sicily, and Vienna as a trip and saw how "Rakuten Mobile" works there.
So here, I wrote how fast it worked and where I used my Rakuten Mobile line!

What is Rakuten Mobile?

Rakuten Mobile is a mobile phone service provided by Rakuten Group, a major Japanese internet service company. The service officially launched in April 2020, featuring its own network and the world's first fully virtualized mobile network. Rakuten Mobile aims to offer high-quality communication services at low prices, with plans that include both data and voice calls. One of its attractions is the integration with Rakuten Group's services, offering point rewards and special benefits. Rakuten Mobile provides customers with simple and understandable pricing plans, along with flexible services tailored to the lifestyles of its users.

Why is it possible to use the line overseas for FREE?

Rakuten Mobile can be used overseas without any additional charges, free for up to 2GB every month. It is available in 72 designated countries and regions, utilizing local mobile communications for reliable signal strength.

Furthermore, additional data can be purchased starting from 500 yen per GB with a Gigacharge!You can use it at the regular Rakuten Mobile rates!

Before traveling, there's no need to rent or purchase a Wifi router or SIM, making it both cost-effective and convenient.

What is international roaming?

International roaming refers to the method of using a domestic telecommunications carrier abroad in the same manner. Rakuten Mobile has partnerships with 72 designated countries and regions, allowing the use of local telecommunications networks for data communication, voice calls, and SMS. Rakuten Mobile subscribers can use up to 2GB overseas every month for free, without the need for application! Even if additional data is purchased starting from 500 yen per GB, the billing is structured to come from Rakuten Mobile within Japan.

I went to Berlin, Catania in Sicily, and Vienna and...

Berlin

During the 5-day stay, there were no instances of being out of coverage!

I was able to use the internet comfortably with speeds ranging from 47Mbps to 150Mbps, similar to the Setagaya-ku area where Rakuten's headquarters located!

Catania（Sicily）

During the 4-day stay, there were no instances of being out of service area!

The signal was so reliable that even in rural areas, Google Maps could be used without any issues, with speeds ranging from 21Mbps to 140Mbps!

※It's a screenshot since there was no one nearby to take a picture of the smartphone, as it was a rural area. However, it was unmistakably taken in Catania!

what you can do with 2GB

WhatsApp/LINE: Approximately 660,000 times
Google Translate: About 10,000 sentences
Google Maps: Approximately 2,000 time

Remarks

To avoid running out of data, I recommend you to always stay connected to Wifi while staying at the hotel!

To prevent accidentally disconnecting from Wifi, I spent my time in the hotel using airplane mode with Wifi enabled.

How to use international roaming

You can use FREE international roaming by just turning on "International Roaming" from My Rakuten Mobile before the departure. You don't need any application beforehand.

1.Turn on "International Roaming" from My Rakuten Mobile.

2.Turn on "Data Roaming" from the iPhone settings page.

With that, the setup is complete.

Usage status can always be checked from My Rakuten Mobile.

How to change the local network settings

There are rumors that you can't choose Network carriers, but... You can!

1.From the iPhone settings, press "Cellular."

2.Press "Network Selection"

3.Turn off "Automatic."

4.Select the network you want to use.

With that, network selection is complete.

If you move to a different country or region and the network of the carrier you are using goes out of service, the setting will not change and will remain out of service. To automatically search for a network and reconnect to another carrier, please set the network search setting to "Automatic." Upon returning to your country, set the Network selection to "Automatic" or manually to "Rakuten."
