Friendship is something (that we all need)

but is actually difficult to define.

Probably the most significant friendships are those / made in early adulthood.

This is the period (in our lives) when we experience the adult world (for the first time),

and so we naturally remember the people /

with whom we share those experiences.

The friendships / we make then /

are not only important in themselves,

but can form the pattern for other relationships

at work and in marriage.

Our friends show us (how to live).

Becoming a skilled writer requires

a process similar to

becoming a skilled baseball player.

The best players have to play a lot of baseball-that's why young players begin

in the minor leagues, where they can play more.

But baseball players actually spend

more of their time watching baseball

than playing it.

The very same thing is true of writing.

Good writers have to write a lot,

but they read even more-they watch how

other people throw words around to catch meaning.

The more you read, the better you write.

Argument is essential for another reason too.
Once we have arrived at a conclusion
that is well -supported by reasons,
Argument is the way that we explain and defend it.
A good argument offers reasons and evidence
so that other people can make up their minds
for themselves.
If you become convinced that we should indeed change the way we raise and use animals,
for example, you must use arguments to explain how you arrived at your conclusion.

Argument is essential, firstly,

as a way of finding out

which views are better than others.

Not all views are equal.

Some opinions are supported by strong reasons,

others have much weaker support,

but often we don't know which are which.

We need to give arguments for different opinions and then assess those arguments to see

how strong they really are.

The generation gap—the conflict between young people and their parents、

or people of their parents' age— has been around

as long as people have lived on earth.

It exists because young people want new things and want to be different from their parents.

But the parents' generation want to hold onto

the old and to freeze things in time.

They find it difficult to accept new things

and to allow so-called progress to happen,

even though they were young themselves

once upon a time.

The British, like the Japanese, are

great readers of newspapers.

The world's first daily newspaper,

The Daily Courant,

was published in London in 1702,

and the British newspaper industry has always been powerful.

British people do not read as many newspapers as they did fifty years ago

when there was no competition from television,

but even so most adults in the country read

a daily newspaper.

Excuse me. Could you help me, please?

Certainly. What can I do for you?

I'm looking for a pair of leather hiking boots.

I take a size 28.

What price range do you have in mind?

We have boots ranging from $120 to $350.

Well, I'm going to do some serious hiking

in the mountains for a few days.

I'll need some strong, comfortable boots.

In that case, you'll be looking at

the top end of the price range.

These two pairs are the best on the market.

I like the look of this pair.

Do you have them in black as well as brown?

Yes, we do. I'll bring a size 28 and 29.

People usually wear thick socks with hiking boots so you may need a size bigger.
