From"Choosing Terror" written by Marisa Linton. Introduction

This book deals with the successive groups of political leaders who dominated the Parisian Jacobin Club between 1789 and 1794. It includes, but is not limited to, the group led by Robespierre, Saint-Just, and others(known as the Montagnards) which dominated the revolution in its most radical phrase, between June 1793 and July 1794.(1-2)

All of these Jacobian leaders( not the Montagnards alone) publicly identified themselves as men of virtue. This meant that they were ready to put the public good before anything else, before their own self-interes, and before personal loyalties to friends and family.(2)

The book has two aims. The first is to examine the inherent contradiction between identity and reality in Jacobian politics. The second is to uncover how this lived contradiction contributed to the self-destruction of the revolutionary leaders in the politicians' terror.(2)

The name "Jacobins" derived from the political club of which they were members.(6)
