今日の5秒英会話は、 "IOW" どんな意味でしょうか？
正解は、 "In Other Words(言い換えれば、つまり、要は）" でした。
"In other words" と言えば、
ジャズのスタンダードナンバーとしても名高い"Fly Me to the Moon"を思い出しました。
ニューヨークのキャバレーでの初演時のタイトルが "In other words" だったのです。
曲奏も現在耳にするアレンジとは全く異なる3拍子でしたが、
1960年代、この曲を世に広く知らしめるアレンジの1つとなるボサノヴァバージョンが完成しました。
そしてまた同じころ、アポロ計画まっただ中のアメリカではフランク・シナトラがこの曲をカバーし、
時代のテーマソングとして大旋風が巻き起こりました。
シナトラバージョンの "Fly Me to the Moon" は、アポロ10号、11号にも積み込まれ、
人類が月に持ち込んだ最初の曲になったのだそうです。
日本の歌姫 宇多田ヒカルさんも"Fly Me to the Moon"をカバーしていました。
聞いてみると、よく知るバージョンにはなかった冒頭部にこんな歌詞がついていました。
