話:
The Two frogs
There once lived two frogs, one in Osaka, and one in Kyoto.
They both were curious about what lay outside their towns.
The frog from Osaka wanted to see how Kyoto was like,
and the frog from Kyoto wanted to see how Osaka was like.
So they both decided to go out on a journey,
and they happened to set out on the same day.
They hopped and hopped, climbing mountains and descending valleys for days.
At last, half way between the two towns, the frogs met.
Upon seeing each other, they fell into conversation.
“I am from Osaka. I want to see how Kyoto is like.”
“I am from Kyoto. I want to see how Osaka is like.”
"Let’s stand up on our hind legs, and hold onto each other.
Then we can each look at the town he is traveling to."
“I see! What a great idea! Let’s try it!”
And so, they stood up and held onto each other’s shoulders.
The Kyoto frog turned his nose towards Osaka,
and the Osaka frog turned his nose towards Kyoto;
but the foolish things forgot that when they stood up
their eyes lay in the backs of their heads,
and that though their noses might point to the places to which they wanted to go,
their eyes turned toward the places from which they had come.
"Let me see…, well, well, well. What do you know!" said the Osaka frog,
"Kyoto looks exactly like Osaka. It is certainly not worth such a long journey.
I shall go home!"
The Kyoto frog said the same.
And so, with a “see you!” the two frogs made farewell and set off for home again, both believing for the rest of their lives that Osaka and Kyoto were as alike as two peas….
