ファイナルペーパー
時間をかけて考えることの方が大事だと思うので、私の授業では試験はありません。
毎回ペーパーのトピックというのは変わるのですが、今回は以下の通り。
(*時間があるときにあとで訳します)
You are asked to write a paper of 7-8 pages (12 pt. Times New Roman, double-spaced, MLA
format) on one of the following topics.
A) How do writers define national consciousness through different experiences of people in the
U.S.? How do writers challenge often valued notions that define conditions of contemporary life,
like MODERNITY, PROGRESS, TECHNOLOGY, MULTICULTURALISM, WHITENESS
(as achievement of success), or GLOBALIZATION? What are the costs, and to whom?
Focus on one of these notions and discuss, using two or three works. You are free to use any work
but one of them should be Karen Tei Yamashita’s Tropic of Orange or Junot Diaz’ The Brief
Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.
Possible approaches: How has your idea of any of these notions changed after reading
the works this semester? Do characters in the novels or short stories we have read
all have the same ideas about, or relationship to, these notions? Do female characters
have the same relationship to them as male characters? Do ideas about these notions
change depending on the historical time period of a given work, developing over
the course of a period?
B) Find an interview given by Karen Tei Yamashita or Junot Diaz, and discuss an idea that
you think can be demonstrated in their works. Make sure to give a citation in MLA
format at the end of your paper.
