Obama once wrote that misunderstanding is the reason people fight. Jews and palestinians understand each other, pakis and hindus etc., better than we do. Giving them stories to read isn't gnna stop them killing each other: they don't care. Literature has aesthetic value but extrapolating politics from novels is misleading. Esp. pacifism, in whose name England was invaded and nearly destroyed by Hitler. Anyway, pacifism doesn't work.

I am not Obama.
Sure, I don't know if literature is the answer, quite possibly not, but I happen to believe that sometimes it can have the power to move people. That goes beyond the domain of pure aesthetics. Of course, to think this can have anything to do with avoiding war is wishful. But I need to think this way because of what I went through as a child, and noone who hasn't experienced it has the right to tell me how to feel on this.
I also come from a country which was made pacifist by the US. We are only granted the right to fight back. But this is precisely why I DO think defensive warfare is justifiable if not a worthy cause, and you are mistaken to think that I don't have enormous respect for anyone who sacrifices his/her life for it.

私は、戦後アメリカに平和主義にさせられた国の人間です。私達には防衛権しかない。だけど、だからこそ私は自己防衛のための戦争の正当性を認めているし、もし私がそのために命の犠牲を払うひとに対して多大なる敬服の念を抱いてないと思うならば、あなたは間違っている。
