ひ～くんの英語よもやま話=427= （ 時を刻む、それとも… ＋）

午前中は蝉の合唱が聞こえていたが、午後になると止んだ。鳥や蝶等なども静かになった。 午後2時の気温は37.5℃、湿度は47%であった。
カレンダーを見ると7月も残り3日である。 時はぼさっとしているとすぐにながれる。時を刻まなくちゃと思う。 さて、どうして刻む？ たとえば、街の風景を眺めに行く、スケッチに出かける、俳句を詠む、花を生ける、サイクリングする、読書する、庭いじりする…などなどあるだろう。 さて僕の場合は？ う～ん、今のところは書くことかな。皆さんは、時のながれを何で刻んでおられますか？ すると、「肩ひじ張らず時の流れに身を任せて生きていくのが一番よ…」という声がどこかから聞こえてきた。
A chorus of cicadas could be heard in the morning, but it stopped in the afternoon. Birds, butterflies, etc. also became quiet. The temperature at 2:00 p.m. was 37.5°C and the humidity was 47%.
Looking at the calendar, there are only three days left in July. The time will just pass if we do nothing. I think we should “check” the time. Well, how do you make it? For example, by going out to admire the city scenery, sketching, writing haiku, arranging flowers, cycling, reading, gardening---these are just a few of the ways that come to mind. If you ask me what my case is, I would answer that at the moment I guess I'm “carving” the time with words. What do you do to mark the passage of time? Then I heard a voice from somewhere saying, "It's best to just live with the flow of time and let it happen…”

On July 29, 1279, five emissaries [=messengers] dispatched by Kublai Khan from the Mongol Yuan dynasty were beheaded [=killed] by Japan. 1279年7月29日、モンゴルの元朝(1271-1368)からクビライ・ハーンが遣わした5人の使者が、日本によって斬首された。

注： In 1274 the Mongol Empire under Kublai Khan launched the first of two failed invasions of Japan. Eight years before, Kublai had sent a letter to the Japanese emperor, threatening the use of force unless Japan submitted [=if Japan didn’t submit]. 1274年、クブライ・ハーン率いるモンゴル帝国は、2度にわたる日本侵略失敗のうち最初の失敗を経験した。その8年前、クブライは日本の皇帝に書簡を送り、日本が服従しなければ武力を行使すると脅していた。
The Japanese did not respond. The Mongol empire launched an amphibious [=a land-and-sea] assault [=attack] on Japan. However, the Mongols were repulsed [=repelled=driven away] in their first invasion, and when they were forced back to their ships, they were sunk by a great typhoon.
日本はそれに返答しなかった。そこでモンゴル帝国は日本への水陸両用攻撃を仕掛けた。しかし、モンゴル軍は最初の侵攻で撃退され、船まで退却したところ、大きな台風（←いわゆる神風）によって沈没した。
Another invasion occurred [=took place] in 1281. Prior to this Kublai Khan had sent emissaries [=envoys] from the Yuan dynasty to Japan to negotiate but the Japanese had them beheaded. Again the Mongols were defeated by stiff resistance and their retreating ships sunk [=were sunk] by a typhoon.
1281年にも侵略が行われた。これに先立ち、クブライ・ハーンは交渉のために元朝から使者を日本に送っていたが、日本は彼らを切り殺した。この時もモンゴル軍は激しい抵抗に敗れ、おまけに退却する船は台風で沈没した。
The invasions were important moments in both countries, a defining battle in Japan's history, and a limit to the Mongol expansion that had been unchecked until then. この侵略は両国にとって重要な出来事であり、日本の歴史を決定づけた戦いであり、それまで歯止めがかからなかったモンゴルの侵略に歯止めをかけるものであった。

外気温が35℃ぐらいの時でも、自室のクーラーの設定温度は30℃にしています。この時、室内温度は26℃位になりますが十分快適です。 自室の広さは8畳位で閉めきるようにしています。 通常いわれている設定温度は、26~28℃ですが、私はそれよりかなり高めにしています。 これで十分なので猛暑もあまり苦になりません。みなさんも試してみては如何でしょう！今日もお読みいただきありがとうございました。ご感想を hidemi@kvision.ne.jp 迄お寄せくださると嬉しいです。
