昨日、競歩もどきのウオーキングのたのしみについて書いた。もちろん、ウオーキングのたのしみはその他にも見つけられる。 大気のなかに、陽光の中に、身をさらすのは得難い解放感である。それから、出会う人とあいさつ、会話を交わすこともたのしい。 概して、出会う人はうつむき加減である。あいさつをうまくかわすには、出会う前から当方の顔を上げてアイコンタクトをとるようにしている。ひとつのあいさつが、もうひとつのあいさつを生み、ウオーキングが終わる頃には静かな喜びとしてこころのなかに溜まる。
Yesterday I wrote about the joy of my own race-like walking. Of course, there are other joys to be found in walking. The exposure to the air and sunlight brings a sense of freedom that is hard to come by. I also enjoy greeting and talking to the people I meet. Generally, the people I meet are looking down. To exchange greetings well, I try to look up and make eye contact with them before we meet. One greeting begets another, and at the end of the walk, a quiet joy fills my heart.
Today in History:
On June 18, 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte and France were defeated by British forces under the Duke of Wellington and Prussian troops under Field Marshal von Blücher at the Battle of Waterloo. 1815年6月18日、ナポレオン・ボナパルトとフランスは、ワーテルローの戦いでウェリントン公率いるイギリス軍とフォン・ブリュッヒャー元帥率いるプロイセン軍に敗れた。
注：1815年にエルバ島から帰還し皇帝の座に返り咲いたナポレオンは、ウェリントン公爵の英蘭連合軍とフォン・ブリュッヒャー元帥のプロイセン軍を打倒すべく、12万の兵力を率いて出陣した。1815年6月16日から3日間に渡り交戦し、6月18日の戦いで大敗した。退位したナポレオンはイギリスに降伏してセントヘレナ島に流され、1821年にこの地で死去した。プロイセンは、現在のドイツ北部からポーランド西部にかけて領土とし、首都はベルリンにあった。
