近年、気候変動(climate change)により、気象条件の平均値
(the mean/average value of climate conditions)が頼りにならないことがしばしばである。 日本人は季節の変化にとても敏感(be sensitive to ~)で、そのため四季にとどまらず、二十四節気(the 24 seasons of a year)に分けたりする。 近年、この先人の知恵がうまく通用しない(recently, the wisdom of our ancestors won’t work well)のはとても残念である。
今年も梅雨入りが平年より遅れているが、とりあえず、梅雨に対して私たちのもつ、連想の核を英語でまとめてみる：The rainy season in Japan usually lasts from early June to mid-July. During this time, many parts of Japan experience hot and humid days, moving from south to north across the archipelago, except for Hokkaido. The abundant water that the rainy season brings is vital to our country, which has been called the land of dewy and fresh-looking rice plants.
注：最終文は梅雨のもたらす潤沢な水は瑞穂の国と呼ばれてきた我が国土に忘れてはならない大切な連想である。 「瑞穂の国」とはなんと美しい表現であろう。英訳を味わっていただけると幸いである。

On June 16, 1873, U.S. President Ulysses Grant set aside part of the Wallowa Valley in Oregon for the Nez Perce Indian Tribe. The order was rescinded [=cancelled] two years later and the tribe was forcibly relocated to Oklahoma. 1873年6月16日、ユリシーズ・グラント米大統領はオレゴン州ワロワ・バレーの一部をネズパース・インディアン部族のために確保した。この命令は2年後に取り消され、部族はオクラホマに強制移住させられた。
On June 16, 1963, the Soviet space mission Vostok 6 was launched with Valentina Tereshkova on board, becoming the first woman in space. 1963年6月16日、ソ連の宇宙ミッション「ボストーク6号」が、バレンティーナ・テレシコワを乗せて打ち上げられ、女性初の宇宙飛行士となった。
