田植えがすむと、水田は水の鏡のようにようになります。 初夏のあおぞらに浮かぶ白雲を反射します。 よくみるとミズスマシたちが水紋をあちこちにつくっています。ドジョウ、メダカ、オタマジャクシもごそごそ動いています。 7月になれば、カエルたちも合唱を始めます。 通勤の高速バスの車窓から眼下に広がる水をいっぱいたくわえた棚田の風景を眺めるのがとても好きでした。After planting rice seedlings the paddy-fields are like a mirror of water. It reflects the white clouds floating in the early summer azure. If you look closely, you can see that some whirligigs are making water rings here and there. Dojos, medakas, and tadpoles are also moving around in the water. Frogs start singing in chorus in July. I loved to look out of the window of the express bus on my way to and from work and see the terraced rice paddies filled with water spread out below.

On June 8, 1783, the Laki volcano in southern Iceland began an 8-month eruption that killed 10,000 people and caused widespread famine throughout Asia and Europe. 1783年6月8日、アイスランド南部のラキ火山が8ヵ月にわたって噴火し、1万人が死亡、アジアとヨーロッパ全土に飢饉が広がった。
注：噴煙の影響で、北半球全体の気温が下がった。イギリスでも火山灰が降り、1783年の夏は「砂の夏」（sand-summer）と呼ばれた。
On June 8, 1987, New Zealand's Labour government enacted legislation against nuclear weapons and nuclear-powered ships in New Zealand. 1987年6月8日、ニュージーランドの労働党政権は、ニュージーランドにおける核兵器および原子力船の使用を禁止する法律を制定した。
注：ニュージーランドは、国際的な軍縮論議などで、約30年にわたって非核政策を積極的に訴えている。
