小田原城に近接した城山陸上競技場を訪れた。 輝く初夏の緑の中の陸上競技場は美しい。 競技場では二日間にわたり、神奈川県西地区の中学生のレースが行われた。大会二日目の1500メートル決勝で、孫息子が自己ベストを更新し、準優勝した。白熱のレースと彼の力走は瞼に焼きついた。 ところで心打つのは上位選手だけではない。 まだ、競技歴の少ない、おぼこい少年、少女たちがいくら先頭から引き離されようともベストを尽くしてゴールを目指す姿は感動的だ。努力は裏切らないと言われる。その通りである。 先頭から周回遅れになろうとも懸命にゴールに向かう粘りは、たゆまぬ努力あって初めて得られる成果である。 We visited the Shiroyama athletic field near Odawara Castle. The track and field in the bright green of early summer was beautiful. The stadium hosted two days of competitions for junior high school students from the western part of Kanagawa Prefecture. On the second day of competition, our grandson set a personal best in the 1500-meter final and finished second. The heated race and his strenuous run were burned into my eyelids. By the way, it's not just top athletes that move us deeply.
It is inspiring to see these novice boys and girls, who have little experience in competition, doing their best to reach the finish line, no matter how far behind the leaders they may be. It is said that hard work never betrays you. It is indeed true. The persistence of the competitors to reach the finish line, even if they are lapped by the leaders, is an achievement that can only be attained through tireless efforts.
