新幹線で隣り合わせた60代とおぼしき男性に、目的駅が近づいたので「どうも…」と言って席を立った。なんと返ってきた返答は「ありがとう」だった。 その人にこちらがしたことと言えば、彼が乗車して、窓際の席に通りやすいように姿勢を変えたぐらいのことしかなかった。乗車中、会話もまったくなかった。経験したことの無い「ありがとう」だった。
I said “Well...” to a man in his 60s who was sitting next to me on the Shinkansen as it approached my destination, and got up from my seat. To my surprise, the response was “Thank you!” The only thing I did for this person was to change my posture so that he could easily walk to his reserved window seat. There was no conversation at all during the ride. It was a “Thank you” I had never experienced before.

On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary (New Zealand) and Tenzing Norgay (Nepal) were the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest as part of a British expedition. 1953年5月29日、エドモンド・ヒラリー（ニュージーランド）とテンジン・ノルゲイ（ネパール）は、英国遠征隊の一員としてエベレスト登頂に初めて成功した。
