昨日に続き、シドニー近郊のKableさんのアイコンタクト考を読んでみましょう：
It is still or was also a feature of ancient/older First Australians culture - to look down when speaking with someone of greater age or rank. 年齢や地位が上の人と話すときに下を向くというのは、今でも、あるいはかつては先住オーストラリア人の文化の特徴であった。
Anglo culture explicitly believes that not looking the other person in the eye is indicative of lying - of being devious - of being untrustworthy. Therefore when children have been caught doing something wrong and are being admonished - you will hear the older person saying: “Now look me in the eye and tell me why you did such-and-such!” イングランド文化では、相手の目を見ないことは嘘をついていること、狡猾であること、信用できないことを示すと明確に考えられている。だから、子どもたちが何か悪いことをして捕まって叱られているとき、年上の人がこう言うのを聞くだろう： 「どうしてそんなことをしたのか、私の目を見て言いなさい！」。
I suspect the looking down is the natural universal behaviour of human beings. We have to be taught to look the older person in the eye - especially being accused of breaking some rule of manner or behaviour. 下を向くというのは、人間として自然な行動ではないかと思う。 だから私たちは年上の人の目を見ることを教えられなければならない。特に、マナーや振る舞いのルール違反を非難された場合はそうだ。
YAMAZAKI Mari is essentially correct - but that is not something known to people immersed within their own culture and believing it is universal - they will without thinking judge as untrustworthy the person who doesn’t look them in the eye. So her writing only makes sense to a Japanese audience - but not really to anyone else (unless they happen to come from a similar cultural way). ヤマザキマリさんのいうことはその通りだ。しかし、それは自国の文化にどっぷり浸かり、それが普遍的なものだと信じている人々にはわからないことだ。だから、彼女の文章は日本人の読者にとっては理解できるが、他の文化圏の読者にとっては（たまたま同じような文化的背景を持つ人でない限り）理解できない。
I suspect the looking down is the natural universal behaviour of human beings. We have to be taught to look the older person in the eye.下を向くというのは、人間として自然な行動ではないかと思う。 だから私たちはアイコンタクトを躾けられないといけない。という考えが印象に残りました。上下関係がなかった原初時代の人間はどうだったのでしょうか? あまり追及しても意味ないかも!?
今日は暖かく、ほとんど無風でした。 作業が中途になっていた菜園のしごとを完了しました。 細ネギに加えて、パセリ、水菜、ベイビーリーフ、春菊の種を撒き、虫よけのカバーをセットしました。順調に育てば20日くらいで食卓にのるはずです。
