アイコンタクトについて、英語の母語話者に訊いてみました。
I know that your society is a culture that values eye contact. Even today, many Japanese people are not good at eye contact. What do you think about Mari Yamazaki's advice below? I would appreciate it if you could teach me when you have time. 貴社会がアイコンタクトを大切にする文化であることは知っています。 ところで、現在でも多くの日本人はアイコンタクトが苦手です。 下記のヤマザキマリさんのアドバイスについてどう思いますか？お時間のあるときに教えていただけるとありがたいです。
Mari Yamazaki, an essayist who is well versed in Italian culture, offers advice to Japanese people who have difficulty looking the other person in the eye during conversation: イタリア文化に詳しいエッセイストのヤマザキマリさんが、会話中に相手の目を見るのが苦手な日本人にアドバイスをしています：
It is unreasonable to associate a person's ability to look into another person's eyes while speaking with their honesty or trustworthiness. There are many people around me who are bad at making eye contact when they speak. But such people are generally sincere and trustworthy. 相手の目を見て話すことができるかどうかを、その人の誠実さや信頼性と結びつけるのは無理がある。私の周りには、話すときに目を合わせるのが下手な人がたくさんいる。しかし、そういう人は概して誠実で信頼できる。
Marieさんの返答は次の通りです：
You are right about being taught to make eye contact. We were taught to look a person in the eyes and give a firm handshake. 確かにアイコンタクトをとるように教わりました。 相手の目を見て、しっかりと握手をするように教わりました。
If a person has trouble making eye contact, they can look at the other person’s forehead and the other person will not know the difference. アイコンタクトが苦手な場合、相手のおでこを見ればいいのです。そうすれば相手は違いには気づきませんから。
When a person in the US does not make eye contact, the other person might think that he or she is dishonest or shifty. アメリカでは、目を合わせない人がいると、相手はこの人は不誠実な人だ、うさんくさい人だと思うかもしれません。
However, scientists have tested that theory, and found that it is not true. Often dishonest people make eye contact and reliable people sometimes do not make eye contact. しかし、科学者たちはその理論を検証し、事実ではないとわかっています。 不誠実な人はしばしば目を合わせ、信頼できる人は目を合わせないことがあるのです。
異文化間で身振りやしぐさが異なるために誤解が起こるのは、避けたいものです。互いの文化について知りうることが、随分容易になった現代、相互の文化を受け入れる度量・器量が私たちに求められると思います。
