全米各地の大学でイスラエル軍のガザ攻撃に対する抗議活動が広がり、逮捕者も出ています。Democracy Now! は次のように伝えています：
Nearly 300 peaceful protesters were arrested over the weekend as student-led Gaza solidarity encampments on U.S. university and college campuses face an intensifying crackdown[=crushing]. Democracy Now! spoke with Columbia University professors and students Monday as they were threatened with suspension [=stoppage] but voted to continue the Gaza Solidarity Encampment, which began almost two weeks ago. “Hundreds of our students have been disciplined [=punished] in the past six months on unfair premises [=grounds],” said Sueda Polat, a Columbia student organizer who is studying human rights. “We are willing to put a lot on the line [=willing to risk a lot] for this cause. I agree that most people get feedback for their work. However, laborers who clean bathrooms at airports probably get no feedback unless there are complaints. 大抵の人が自分の仕事に対して評価を受けるということには同意します。 しかし、空港でトイレを掃除する人は、クレームがない限り反応はないでしょう。
So I always thank the person who happens to be cleaning when I am there. I also thank the people who change the plastic bags in the trash cans. だから私はいつも、たまたま掃除をしていた人に出会えば、お礼を言う。ゴミ箱のビニール袋を交換してくれる人にもお礼を言う。
I made it a habit to give positive feedback to all the teachers who worked under me while I was principal. 私は校長在任中、部下として働いてくれた教師全員にポジティブなフィードバックをすることを習慣にしていました。
I enjoy hearing parents praise me and former students remember me fondly and express their feelings. 父兄が私を褒めてくれたり、卒業生が私のことを懐かしく思い出して気持ちを表現してくれたりするのを聞くのはとても嬉しいものです。
I have an expression that I try to live by: “Do not let another person’s behavior towards you, change your way of treating people with kindness.”指針にしている諺があります。 「あなたに対する他の人の振る舞いが、あなたの親切な接し方を変えてしまわないように」
So if someone is rude, I say, “I am sorry you feel that way."もし誰かが無作法な反応をしてきたら、そのようにお感じになるのならすみません" と言います。
The Bible says: “A kind word turns away wrath.” 聖書には「優しい言葉は怒りを遠ざける」とある。
仕事と評価の問題で、評価をいたずらに行うと、人々のものごとを見る眼が曇ってしまいます。例えば、新聞・雑誌が好んで扱う○○ランキングがあります。 ものごとの多様性を本当に尊ぶのであれば、物事の一面を対象にランキングをつける愚に気づくべきでしょう。When it comes to the issue of work and evaluation, incautious evaluations can cloud our view of the way we see things in the world. For example, there are certain rankings that newspapers and magazines like to feature. If we truly value the diversity of things, we should be aware of the folly of ranking things according to one aspect of them.
