ひ~くんの英語よもやま話=335=（お釈迦様の日＋いくつかの雑感）

四月八日は、お釈迦様の日です。 お釈迦様の生涯を簡潔にまとめてみました：
Siddharth Gautama was born near a town in the foothills of the Himalayas. Gautama became a wandering monk. For six years, he sought enlightenment by practicing extreme forms of self-denial and self-torture. But Gautama finally decided that such practices could never lead to enlightenment. シッダールト・ゴータマはヒマラヤ山脈のふもとの町の近くで生まれた。ゴータマは放浪の僧となった。彼は6年間、極端なまでの禁欲と苦行を実践し、悟りを開こうとした。だが、ゴータマは結局、そのような修行が悟りにつながることはないと悟った。
One day, Gautama wandered into a village and sat under a shady bo tree. He decided to meditate under the tree until he gained enlightenment. Several hours later, enlightenment came. Others learned of his experience and began to call him Buddha. Buddha learned from his experience that people could find release from the sufferings of life and that people had to free themselves from all the desires and worldly things. For the rest of his life, Buddha preached the message of how to overcome suffering. He died at the age of about 80. His disciples gave him an elaborate funeral, burned his body, and distributed his bones as sacred ashes. ある日、ゴータマはある村にふらっとやってきて、木陰の菩提樹の下に座った。悟りを開くまでその木の下で瞑想することにした。数時間後、悟りが訪れた。他の人たちも彼の体験を学び、彼をブッダ（悟りの人）と呼ぶようになった。 ブッダはその経験から、人は人生の苦しみから解放されることを知り、あらゆる欲望や世俗的なものから自由にならなければならないことを悟った。その後、ブッダはいかにして苦しみを克服するかという教えを生涯にわたり説いた。彼は80歳位で亡くなった。弟子たちは入念な葬儀を行い、遺体を焼き、骨を仏舎利（聖なる遺灰）として分配した。
ブッダの臨終（涅槃）のようすを、Introducing Buddha(Icon Books,1998)は次のように描写しています：

When he was about 80, sensing death was approaching, Buddha gathered his followers around him. He lay down on his right side, resting his head on his hand. At that moment the birds did not utter a sound; the winds ceased to move and the trees shed wilted flowers, which came down like tears. ブッダは80歳の頃、死が近づいていることを感じ、自分の周りに弟子たちを集めた。彼は右向きに横たわり、頭を手の上に休めた。 その時、鳥たちはさえずりを止め、風は動きを止め、木々は涙がこぼれ落ちるように萎（しお）れた花々を散らせた。
阿弥陀寺の幼稚園に通っていました。 ♪のんのん、ののさま、ほとけさま、おててあわせておがみましょ～♪とみんなで歌っていました。 お釈迦様の日には、お寺の本堂で、お釈迦様の像に甘茶を掛けたような気がしますが、記憶が定かではありません。
