台湾の半導体工場が熊本に進出のニュースが話題になっています。 CNNニュース
は次のように報じています：
Sometimes called the most important company in the world, TSMC (officially Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) produces an estimated 90% of the world’s super-advanced semiconductor chips, which are used to power [=operate] everything from smartphones to artificial intelligence applications. ときに、世界最重要会社と呼ばれる、TSMC（台湾半導体製造会社）はスマートフォンから人工知能アプリケーションまで、あらゆるものを動かす世界の超高性能半導体チップの推定90％を生産している。
To meet rising demand and facing pressure to be physically closer to its customers, TSMC is building new fabs in the United States, Japan and Germany. Its existing plants [=facilities] are in Taiwan as well as in eastern China and Washington state. 高まる需要に対応するため、また、顧客との物理的な距離を縮める必要に迫られているため、TSMCは米国、日本、ドイツに新たな工場を建設している。 既存の工場は台湾のほか、中国東部とワシントン州にある。
Last month, the chip giant opened its first fab in the Japanese city of Kumamoto and is set [=and plans] to open two $40 billion facilities in Phoenix, Arizona in the coming years to make smaller, more advanced chips. It has committed to investing $3.8 billion to build a fab in Dresden, Germany, the company’s first in Europe. 先月、TSMCは日本の熊本市に初の工場を開設し、今後数年のうちにアリゾナ州フェニックスに、より小型で高度なチップを製造するための400億ドル規模の施設を2つ開設する予定だ。同社ははヨーロッパで初めてとなるドイツのドレスデンに38億ドルを投じて工場を建設することを確約している。
The soaring demand, particularly for chips that power AI, has created a shortage of talent for the semiconductor industry. TSMC said last year that one of its fabs in Arizona would be delayed because of a lack of specialist workers. 特にAIを動かすチップの需要が急上昇しているため、半導体業界は人材不足に陥っている。TSMCは昨年、アリゾナ州にある工場のひとつが、専門の技術者が不足しているため操業が遅れるだろうと発表した。
“Finding the best talent has always been an issue but it has become even more so since the world suddenly woke up in the past few years and realized semiconductors are important,” said Stewart Randall, head of electronics and software consultancy. 「優秀な人材を見つけることは常に問題でしたが、ここ数年で世界が半導体が重要であることに気づいてからは、さらにその傾向が強まっています」と、エレクトロニクスとソフトウェアのコンサルタント会社の責任者であるスチュワート・ランドール氏は話した。
