ひ~くんの英語よもやま話=317=（タイドプール）

「何か好きな単語を日本語でも、外国語でもいいのでもっていたら、挙げてみてください」と問われたら、どんな単語が思い浮かびますか？ 私には、真っ先に思いつくのが、英単語のtidepoolです。日本語では、「潮だまり」です。「タイドプール」と「シオダマリ」はどちらも同じものを指しているが、私にはなぜか前者の方がロマンチックに聞こえます。Tidepoolにいつ頃出会ったか覚えていませんが、この単語に出会ったとき、まだ沿岸に自然が豊かに残っていた頃の光景が脳裏に浮かんできました。海は満ち潮の時と引き潮の時ではまるで違う風景でした。 潮が引くと、いくつもの潮だまりがあちこちに現れました。海藻に囲まれた潮だまりに、小さな魚、小エビ、小カニなどが、ひっそりとではあったが、きらきら輝くような生命の気配が溢れていました。
If you were asked to name a favorite word, either in Japanese or in a foreign language, what word would come to mind? The first word that comes to mind for me is the English word, “tidepool.” In Japanese, it is "shiodamari.” Both ”tidepool” and “shiodamari” refer to the same thing, but somehow, the former sounds more romantic to me. I can't remember when I first encountered the word, “tidepool,” but when I came across the word, it brought to mind a scene from a time when nature was still untouched along the coast. The sea looked very different when the tide was high and when it was low. When the tide went out, many tide pools appeared here and there. In a tide pool surrounded by seaweed, small fish, small shrimps, small shellfishes, and small crabs were the sparkling signs of life, though they nestled quietly.

昨日、公民館講座で先日紹介した下記テキストを読みました。
プーチンさん、最近歌を歌ったことがありますか？ あなたの愛する母国ロシアには世界に誇る美しいメロディーと歌詞のロシア民謡があります。 例えば、「トロイカ」：夕日に映える雪の白樺並木を走るトロイカの快走は、どれほど心を軽やかにしてくれることでしょう！例えば、「赤いサラファン」：ロシアの民族衣装サラファンに寄せる人々の想いをなんと穏やかに謳いあげていることでしょう！ 例えば、「ペチカ」：雪の降る夜の楽しいペチカ、寒い国土にぴったりのペチカの赤い炎。例えば、「ボルガの舟歌」：ボルガ河で力をあわせて生き抜く船乗りたちの尊さを謳いあげている。例えば、「ともしび」：戦地に赴くため霧の中に消えゆく若者と彼を送る恋人との別れを哀感に満ちたメロディーで歌っている。プーチンさん、人民を見下ろしながら、額に皺寄せて演説をぶつ前に、あなたが幼き頃お母さんが繰り返し歌ってくれたに違いない、それから子供時代に友たちと合唱したに違いない、あの歌をこの歌を、思い出してください。 そして声高らかに歌ってください。
Mr. Putin, have you lately sung a song? Your beloved motherland, Russia, has world-class Russian folk songs with beautiful melodies and words. For example "Troika": how lightheartedly the Troika runs through the snow-covered birch trees at sunset! For example "Red Sarafan" : what a gentle expression of people's feelings about the sarafan, Russia's national costume! For example “Pethika": what fun it is to have pethika on a snowy night!, --- a red flame that is perfect for cold climates. For example, "The Volga Boatmen's Song": the song celebrates the preciousness of sailors working together on the great Volga River. For example, "Tomoshibi (Torch) “: it is a melancholy song about a young man who disappears into the fog to go to war, and his lover who sends him off. Mr. Putin, before you make a speech, looking down at the audience, and wrinkling your forehead, would you please remember the songs you must have sung with your mother and your old friends and sing them loudly and sonorously.
皆さんの反応はさまざまでした。 小生より一世代違うだけで、こういったロシア民謡に不案内である方が相当多く、びっくりしました。 ロシア民謡を口ずさんでいると、会社の幹部から反体制派として目を付けられる時代を経験した方もおられました。 新宿のビルの屋上階で「ともしび」という歌声喫茶で歌われる歌は、ロシア民謡一色だったと、話される方もおられました。 これは小生も同じ経験をしているので、懐かしさが募りました。「是非、プーチンが自国の素晴らしい民謡に気付き、高らかに歌い、心を洗って欲しいです」とメールをくださった方もおられました。
