Putin again addressed the possibility this week in his annual State of the Nation speech, threatening to use nuclear weapons against NATO countries, if they send troops to fight against Russia in Ukraine. Putin’s comments apparently referenced French President’ Emmanuel Macron’s assertion that NATO countries could decide to send troops to Ukraine—a suggestion that the United States, the UK, and Germany almost immediately ruled out. プーチンは今週、年次国家演説で核兵器使用の可能性に再び言及し、もしNATO諸国がウクライナでロシアと戦うために軍隊を派遣すれば、核兵器を使用すると脅した。プーチンの発言は、フランスのエマニュエル・マクロン大統領が、NATO諸国がウクライナに軍隊を派遣する可能性があると主張したことに言及したものである。- この提案は、アメリカ、イギリス、ドイツがほとんど即座に却下した。
先日の食べることに関する ｍｙ brief essayに関して、カルフォルニア在住のMarieさんから感想が届きました：
I always enjoy hearing from you. It is wonderful that you saw the snow! We had rain in the night. You have an interesting perspective on eating. I am thinking about it. I do enjoy a nice meal very much. Now I am thinking about the ill who cannot feed themselves and must be fed by a tube. Are they enjoying their lives?
和文訳は、省きますが、少し注釈を添えてみましょう：have an interesting perspective on～（～に関して面白い見方をする）、the ill=the sick （←集合的に病人を指す）、cannot feed themselves（自分で食べられない←直訳すると自分に餌を与えられない←文法的にいうと、themselvesは目的語で、副詞句ではない）、be fed by a tube（管を通して栄養を摂る）
印象的なつぶやきを見つけました。英文試訳を添えましょう。：昔はひな祭りが終わると人形はすぐに片づけた。 理由は片付けが遅れると、女の子の嫁入りが遅れると信じられていたからだ。しかし、その習慣は女性に結婚を強いる古い発想だ。 三月はしばらく優雅にひな飾りを楽しみたい。坪内稔典（1944- 、俳人） There were and are people who are supposed to put the Hina dolls away once the festival is over. They believed the superstation that if they fail to get rid of hina-dolls in time, their daughters were not able to marry young enough. However, the idea and practice are old-fashioned, forcing women into marriage. Let’s enjoy hina-dolls for a few more days in March!
