CNNの伝える金門島海域の台湾-中国の衝突と実態を読んでみましょう：
Two weeks after two Chinese fishermen drowned while being chased by Taiwan’s coast guard, tensions remain high in the waters around Kinmen, a group of outlying islands controlled by Taiwan but just a stone’s throw from the shores of China. 2人の中国人漁師が台湾の沿岸警備隊に追われて（転覆）溺死してから2週間、金門周辺の海域では依然として緊張が高まっている。金門は台湾が支配する離島群だが、中国の海岸から目と鼻の先にある。
China’s coast guard ships are now a common sight in the area, making increasing incursions [=intrusions] into Taiwan’s prohibited or restricted waters – a designation Beijing now rejects. 中国の沿岸警備船は現在、この海域でよく見かけるようになり、台湾の禁止水域や制限水域への侵入を増やしている ――中国側は進入禁止水域なる呼称を認めていないが。
Signs of the most recent flare-up [=conflict] are also visible in the harbors of Kinmen, where dozens of fishing boats lie idle [=fishing boats are moored] following temporary restrictions on fishing activities. 最近の衝突の気配は、金門の港にも見られる、金門の港では、漁業活動が一時的に制限されたため、数十隻の漁船が操業をしないまま停泊している。
Boat tours around Kinmen are still operating, though under a closer watch by Taiwan’s coast guard. Officers visit each boat before they set sail and warn captains not to stray into Chinese waters. But for most residents in Kinmen, which for decades had been a military frontline for Chinese aggression, it’s life as usual. 金門周辺のボートツアーは、台湾の沿岸警備隊による厳重な監視のもとではあるが、現在も運航されている。監視員が出航前に各船を訪れ、船長に中国領海に迷い込まないよう警告している。しかし、何十年もの間、中国侵略の軍事的最前線であ った金門のほとんどの住民にとっては、いつも通りの生活である。
It’s low season for tourists. Residents go about their business on quiet streets shrouded [=enveloped] in fog and rain. In the late afternoon, teenagers stream out of a high school, which has reopened after the Lunar New Year break. 観光業は不振の時期である。住民たちは霧と雨に包まれた静かな通りで仕事に携わり、夕方には旧正月の休みを終えて再開した高校から若者たちが続々と出てくる。
“We don’t feel nervous at all. This is none of our business. It’s just Taiwan and mainland China having a fight,” said a retired businessman, summing up the kind of nonchalance [=indifference] that is commonplace [=common] on an island that has long been a geopolitical flashpoint [=hotspot]. 「まったく緊張していない。私たちには関係ないことです。これは台湾と中国本土が争っているだけです」と引退した実業家は語った。彼は長い間地政学上の火種となってきたこの島では当たり前のこと、自分たちには言わば無関係な事件であるとかいつまんで言った。
