(It's Friday and that means awesome)
今日は、金曜日です。 おまけに、月曜日が祝日ですから、明日から3連休で、うきうきされている人も多いことでしょう(Today is Friday. And with Monday being a national holiday, many people are probably looking forward to the three-day weekend that starts tomorrow)。 小生は、今朝の海外宛てのメールを、It's Friday here, it's great no matter what the weather is like!と始めました。そこで今回は欧米の人たちがどのような表現で金曜日を描写しているか、見てみましょう(So let's take a look at how native English speakers describe Friday)。 小生が、金曜日の描写を初めて意識したのは、Friday is awesome! でした。 CNNのstudent向けの番組で、冒頭でanchorman が発していました。 かなり昔のことです。その番組は一昨年でしたか、anchorman が代わりました。 新anchorman は Happy Friday!と言っています。 Thank God it’s Friday! はTV dramaなどで聞かれたことがあるかと思いますが、これは仕事から解放される喜びに感謝しています(the working week is nearly over, and a weekend of leisure will soon be here)。これは、もっともよく聞かれる表現(the most popular Friday-related wording)でしょう。 先ほど触れたHappy Friday!は簡単すぎると思われるかも知れませんが (you may think the phrase is too simple to be an effective greeting)、見た目に惑わされないようにしてください(don’t be fooled by appearances)。 I can’t believe it’s Friday already! は、「やあ、もう金曜日ですね！と言った感じで、労働日、すなわちウイークディーからの解放の喜びを表しています(This phrase expresses the joy of liberation from the workday or weekday.)。週の激務をこなしたら（after a hard week’s work）、 Wanna go for a drink after work? (一杯やりますか？) はきっと万国共通(universal)でしょう。 しかし、最近の日本の若者は上司や同僚との飲み会を嫌うとも聞いていますから断定はできませんね（However, we can't make such a sweeping generalization because we often hear that young Japanese people don't like to drink with their bosses and co-workers these days.）。 Have you got any plans for the weekend? (週末は何するの？) などというと、余計なお世話と返されるかも知れません(You may be told to mind your own business in response.)。 えっと、長くなるとせっかくのみなさんの金曜日を台無しにしそうです。この辺りでやめましょう(The further I go, the more likely I am to ruin your great Friday. It would be better to stop here.)。
