『パドヴァの 愛国少年』 の最終章、第5話を読んでみましょう。
They were drinking and discussing their travels and the countries which they had seen; and from one topic to another they began to discuss Italy. One of them began to complain about the inns, another about the railways, and then, growing warmer [=getting excited], they all began to speak evil [=ill] of everything. One should have made a trip to Lapland; another declared that he had found nothing but robbers and bandits [=thieves] in Italy; the third said that Italian officials do not know how to read. ‘It's an ignorant nation [=idiot people],’ continued the first. ‘A filthy [=dirty] nation,’ added the second. ‘Rob—’ exclaimed the third, meaning to say ‘robbers’, but he was not allowed to finish the word. A tempest [=storm] of small coin came down upon their heads and shoulders, fell over the table and the floor with a great clatter.
彼らはワインを飲みながら、見物してきた国々のことをしゃべり、話題を次々と移しイタリアのことを話し始めた。 一人が、宿の悪口をいうと、もう一人は鉄道をくさし、興奮してくると三人はイタリアのあらゆることにケチをつけ始めた。 ひとりは、ラップランドへ旅すればよかったとか、もうひとりはイタリアには泥棒や追はぎしかいなかったと決めつけるように言った。三人目の男はイタリアの役人は文字が読めないといった。最初の男が「あほな国民さ」と続けた。 二番目の男が、「汚い奴らさ」と続けた。 三番目の男が、「泥棒」と言いかけたが、言い終わる前に、小銭の嵐が彼らの頭や肩に降りかかり、テーブルに床に大きな音を立てて降り注いだ。
All three sprang up in anger, looked up, and received another handful of coins in their faces. ‘Take back your money!’ said the lad, disdainfully [=scornfully], poking his head out of the curtains of his berth. ‘I will not accept alms [=charity] from those who insult my country!’. 男たちは怒って立ち上がり、見上げたとたん、またまた手一杯の小銭を顔面に食らった。「お前らの銭、糞くらえだ 。 我が祖国を侮辱するお前らからの施しはまっぴらだ」と少年はカーテンの間から顔を突き出して、蔑（さげす）むように言い放った。
『パドヴァの 愛国少年』は如何でしたか？ きっと話が進展するにつれて理解し易くなったと思います。 もう一度、第一話から読み返してみるとその感覚がもっと味わえるでしょう。幼き頃、同じおとぎ話を何十回となく読んでもらいながら言葉を獲得していくのはどこの国・地域でも同様でしょう。
月がかわって2月になりました。 今日も一日中雨模様で、空気は生ぬるく感じました。庭のラッパ水仙も写真のように一気に20センチ以上に成長していました。The month turned into February. It had rained all day again today, and the air around me felt lukewarm. The daffodil in the garden has quickly grown to more than 20 centimeters tall, as you can see in the photo.
